Help! Where to work near Carlsbad/OC or San Diego?

I need advice on which ICU to work at!
We will be moving to Carlsbad at the end of this month. I have heard great things about Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo and Sharp in Kearny Mesa/SD but am afraid the commute will kill me.
I also know there is Tri Cities in Oceanside and Scripps in Encinitas (which are closer) but I know nothing about their ICUs. I am looking for Surgical/Medical/Transplant/or Trauma ICU.
Is the commute worth it to work at Mission or Sharp?
Does anyone know if any of these hospitals pays time and a half after 8hrs?
Thanks!

the commute from carlsbad to kearny mesa isn't so bad. you can take the coast highway until you get into del mar, and then cut over to either 15 from 56, or take 805 to 163. depending on your shift you might not even see traffic.

hi~
i live in south carlsbad and although i can't tell you specifically about the icu's i can tell you about the commutes...i used to work in kearny mesa and the commute can be from 30min-1 hr depending on when you work. depending on what part of carlsbad you live (for me, scripps encinitas was more convenient so i ended up having my son there in 06 and i loved it there).if you're in north carlsbad, tri-city is closer. mission viejo is like 45 min away, traffic is not too bad at anytime. hope that helps!

Depends what your priorities are...a shorter commute or higher-level nursing?

If you're willing to drive all the way to Sharp then you should also look at Palomar Hospital and Scripps La Jolla. Both are fewer miles than Sharp and both are Trauma hospitals whereas Tri-City and Scripps Encinitas are not. If you want to keep your commute brief then focus on Scripps Encinitas and Tri-City however you won't find the acuity you're seeking. Sharp will provide the trauma & transplants you're interested in.

BTW, Scripps Encinitas has a 12-bed ICU and 8-bed PCU.

I looked at the new ICU at Sharp. There are NO windows! Does anyone on this board work there? I don't know if I can work in a unit w/ no windows. I think I'm still leaning towards Mission Hospital. I got a great vibe when interviewing there. Seemed like they have interesting patients too.

Sharp is opening a new hospital in the next few weeks. I'm almost positive all rooms will have windows.
