Does UCLA cover relocation costs?

by malaski

Hi Everyone,

I have an interview for the New Grad Program at UCLA, and if accepted, I would move out there from Houston. They state they provide "relocation assistance", and I am curious as to what this means. Do they give you any allowance for moving costs? Or does anyone know of any other hospitals in LA or the OC that do?
I am just concerned because I will have to move my stuff to LA - (which will be costly), and I will have to pay a first and last month's rent to secure an apartment out there.
I know how much things cost out there because I lived there 3 years ago - I just don't have a lot of money saved up. Plus I have loans to pay!
I would so greatly appreciate your input on this!

Thank you!!!

For new grads, they will cover up to $1500 in relocation costs in your name only. (Meaning, the receipts must bear your name, not someone else's).

Also, FYI, relocating to LA is pretty cheap right now. I just moved here two weeks ago and found a 1 bedroom in Santa Monica for $1500 with a $500 security deposit. There are a lot of deals like that. Lots of concessions these days because the economy is so bad.

Thanks for the info SFDRN and richo_006! I love this site I hope $1500 will cover everything. Do you know how much night and weekend differential is? I am trying to calculate how long it will take to pay off my loans if I work my butt off for a year - I can't wait till I am debt free!

Night differential is $4, weekend is $2.50.

As for the relocation assistance, just MAKE SURE that your application and all paperwork has your Houston address. I moved out here in November, interviewed with UCLA, and got the job within a month, but they considered me ineligible for relocation assistance since I already had a California address when I came in for my interview.

ETA: On the other hand, I'm fresh out of college with a good salary and a great job. In this economy, I'm not going to complain about missing out on the relocation money.

C'est la vie. The other thing is that you'll probably have to be proactive about asking them about the assistance they offer. I hadn't even heard that it was available until I went in to human resources to be fingerprinted the other day -- after I've started working, and two months after my interview. *eyeroll*
