CA Licensure

Hi all,

I am a nursing student from NY & will be senior this coming school year. I am expecting to graduate & receive my BSN degree on May 2007. I am planning to move to CA to practice my nursing profession. I am just wondering about the timing of when I should apply for licensure and how long will it take to receive the ATT to be able to take the NCLEX-RN. Also, I don't know much about the interim/temporary permit. Will the hospitals allow me to work although I have not taken/passed the NCLEX-RN? Please advise.

Thanks!

Default Re: CA Licensure
I just graduated from my nursing school in Chicago in June this year. The followings are what I did to apply for the NCLEX-RN in CA:

- sent the application to CA BON on June 5
- sent transcript requests to all of my previous schools where I took my
prere. courses on June 5
- official graduated from school on June 10(sat) and my nursing school sent
my nursing degree transcript to CA BON on June 12(Mon)
- went to CA on June 12 to stay with my relatives till now
- did the fingerprint thing on June 13, and sent the form to the CA BON on
June 14. I was told by the agent which did the fingerprint for me that it
would take one to two weeks for the BON to get the result of the
fingerprint.
- called the CA BON on June 13 and was told they just officially got my
"application form"
- called the CA BON again on June 27 and was told my eligibility to take
the exam was issued on June 26( didn't receive any notice yet)
- registered with Pearson on June 28 and got the ATT via e-mail from
Pearson the same day( it's ok to register with them coz they could find out your eligibility with BON themselves)
- The IP/ interm permit arrived two weeks later.
- Taking the NCLEX on Aug 9 in the bay area
- gonna start a new-grad program on Sept 18 if I pass the exam :P

Though I have my IP, many hospitals(good ones) would like me to have my actual licence before I start working. I also prefer to work after I get my licence coz it's very hard to focus on my study after working at least an 8-hour shift. Some hospitals ( in my area) just asked me to apply for they new-grad program after I have my licence.

Hope my experience would be helpful to u.

hi Eve,

Thanks a lot for the thorough info. you have provided....it's very helpful. I am planning to move to the bay area myself. I haven't checked out the new RN grad programs there but I would love to work at UCSF Med Center (if they have one). Do you know which hospitals in the bay area offer new RN grad programs? Thanks!

Which is easier....
To take the NCLEX RN exam in teh state in which you graduated? Then just get your license transferred to california?

Or to take the nclex exam in teh state you want to work in?

I'm so confused about this! Can anyone help?
