I know Im looking into the future a little but.....I am trying to decide if when I'm done with my LPN program, if I do want to continue to get my RN, do I just go to somewhere like apollo and get in and out. Or, do I slowly work on pre-req's while working as an LPN and then try and get into block 3 at a community college. I'm thinking by the time Im ready to go back, the waiting lists will be even longer so I'm not sure how that will play into things. The other thing is, I could also go to UOP and do the LPN-BSN but I hear it's around $40K. Does anyone have ANY advice for me???

If this helps you make your decision - there are no wait times to enter the CC program in block 3. Many students stop at block 3 or fail the program by the time block 3 rolls around.

Oh, yes, that may make a difference. If I can possibly get my employer to send me through that sounds like the way to go......

You won't have to wait to get into Block 3. I am an LPN continuing to RN - once I finished my pre-reqs, I was accepted immediately into my 1st choice college. I will be in Block 4 in the fall and I have worked as an LPN up until this point.. which has given me experience and insight that many of my fellow students do not have.

Sorry to butt in but I am intersted in getting my LPN first due to the LONG waiting list for RN. Are there a lot of LPN jobs in the Phoenix or surrounding areas? And how much do LPN's start at? I am really interested in the ER are there LPN jobs in the ER. And are there any Block 1 classes at night or in the evening? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks!!

Unfortunately, not many hospitals hire LPNs. There are plenty of jobs, but mostly in nursing homes. I kinw the VA and maybe County Hospital use LPNs. I think the start rate at nursing homes is fairly high for an LPN - maybe over 20 bucks an hour.

I would suggest that you start to prepare yourself for as many options as you can by starting to take the prereqs now if you can handle them along with your regular schedule. You will be better prepared to make the decisions once the time arrives. As far as the school that is expensive, well, if you can spare the money and if you can't get accepted at a community college program, it may be your only avenue at that time. But I would exhaust all public ASN or BSN programs before I'd go the private school route. JMO. Good luck.

Thanks for all of your responses. I do not believe I can handle any pre-req's while Im in the LPN program. I will start as soon as I graduate though. I think it would be wise to go the MCCD route first and see what happens. Good idea!! As far as the questions regarding getting an LPN license yes, there is one program I know that offers evening courses. It's the East Valley Institute in Mesa. You can get their number off of the AZBON website. No, there are not many hospital jobs and probably NONE in the ER I would imagine(but I may be wrong), check with Banner and maybe County like someone suggested. LPN's mainly work in LTC and rehab facilites, Dr. offices and clinics. But, you can make good money in some of these areas. I'm going to be attending Maricopa Skills Center. Im excited but nervous too!!!
