Starting your ADN in Phoenix area this Summer/Fall?

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Are you starting (or hoping to start) your ADN in Phoenix Area this Summer or Fall and do you live in the Greater Phoenix area? IF SO, I thought it would be great to start a thread where we could talk about our excitement, questions, worries, advice, etc.

If you fall into this category, please introduce yourself, where in the Valley you live, which school you are attending, and when you are starting your program.

Looking forward to a fruitful discussion!

Would still love to network with brand new nursing students or those about to embark on the journey...

Hi my name is Kayleigh and I will be starting nursing school this August at GCC. I've wanted to be a nurse for as long as I can remember and it has FINALLY hit me that this goal of mine is becoming a reality!!! Although I'm very excited, my excitment is bundled with nerves and anxiety. Unfortunately, I do not live in the Phoenix area at all, so I'll be commuting to school (not so fun :uhoh3:)

Hi Kayleigh! Where are you commuting from?

I'm commuting from Wickenburg!

Wow, Wickenburg! Crazy! Have you met any of your fellow classmates yet? Is this a first or second career for you?

ANYONE ELSE? :) I figured there are a lot of RN/BSN programs starting now and in August/September and we could all share stories.

Haven't actually met anyone, but orientation is this week :D ... and this will be a first career for me!

My name is Nathan and I just found out a few days ago that I will be starting the accelerated program at Gateway cc next month. After being on the waiting list for almost 2 years, I am super stoked that this is finally happening! I'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty stressed right now only having a month to get all my ducks in a row (married with 3 kids and work full time), but nothing is going to get in my way! I currenlty live in Anthem...

Congrats you guys!! I was going to start thru Everest or Grand Canyon in the fall but have opted to do my coreqs in advance at GCC to help cut the costs. (Everest got their accreditation back btw ;) so no worries there. I will be starting in April OR next fall and can't wait. I'm married, mom of 5, a photographer, who jumped out of medicine about 12 yrs ago. I can't wait to get back at it!! Good luck to you all. If you don't mind, i'll lurk here hehe. I'm in El Mirage/Surprise

Kristie

I'm going to lurk too!

I'm Stefanie, and starting at Estrella Mountain this fall. I've been a police dispatcher/911 operator for the last 6 or so years, and to only have two weeks left on the job is a great feeling! :yeah: I'm not going to work for the first semester at least (probably the first year), so I can focus on school. Well, and family. I have a hubby and three kids six and under.

But I have a super amazing family (hubby, mom, in-laws, etc) that are supportive and totally willing to help out. I'm going to do this!

I don't know if nursing will be a first or second career for me.. I'll call it a second, even though I knew I wouldn't want to work for the PD until I retired.. :uhoh3: Is 30 too early for a second career? Not sure about that. ;)

Haha ,@pookapooka, I'm 28 and nursing will be my second career--I have been in sales/marketing management since I graduated college but have never felt that spark with it.

@knicoll71--what was your role in medicine 12 years ago? What pre-reqs do you still need to do? Though a lot of people will "poo poo" the school, you should also look into Carrington College. I know some of the RN programs at Carrington in, say, Las Vegas and Reno have some problems, the Carrington Westside Phoenix program is strong--I met an RN on here who had graduated back in the fall from Carrington's program here in PHX, found a job within 2 weeks of NCLEX passing and was very pleased with the program. Perhaps, though, you are only looking at BSN programs--I'm not sure. I have a B.S. in Psychology and am going to complete the ADN first, then do the BSN online. I know there is also a lot of controversy surrounding that choice but everyone has to do what fits best within their life, schedule, budget, etc.

@natefromea: CONGRATS! I've heard that waiting list business is killer, lol! I, too, am married with a daughter and a full-time job so I know when I found out I made the cut, that's when the stress kicked in, in terms of leaving my job, finances, etc! It will all work out!

So glad to know some others out there who are just starting out! Oh, and @throughCHRISTalone--how was orientation?

@orangesky24- Thanks, they're on my list to check out as well ;) I was a CNA/Reha aide for 5 yrs starting at 20, and then I was a Pharmacy Tech (Acute IV and Narcotics mostly) for 5 yrs...I went back to school for a totally non medically related degree in 2001, then met my husband, didn't have to work, so quit. Now, I'm going back, but to follow my heart and re enter the healthcare workforce. Ultimately, I'd love to end up in the ER or NICU.
