I took ENG102 online, and as long as you have the discipline, plus the essay writing ability, it's a good way to do it. I believe we wrote 5 essays over the entire semester, you can do it on your own time, and don't have to sit in class. (I enjoy English, and it's always been one of my best subjects, but, and no insult intended here, English teachers tend to be boring unless you get really lucky!)

TerreP, Thanks for the advice. I am not concerned about getting that english class finished. Heck, they even offer it over the winter intersession--can be done with it in, what, two weeks? For what it's worth, I ended up dropping that Patho class. I'm going to wait until block 2 to take AB.

Are you in NS now or are you working on pre-reqs?

I am finishing my prereqs next semester, I think. (I am registered for A&P 2 and micro in the spring, but am having second thoughts about taking the two together, since I have found out a little more about the teachers and how tough it's going to be to take both classes and work full time.) I will decide what I am going to do soon, but I am stressing over the decision. I want to get into nursing school soon, but I don't want to sacrifice my gpa just to get the classes done!

Have you thought about taking either Micro or A&P online through Rio? I took 201-202 through Rio and although they were difficult, they were also doable. I feel I really learned a lot because I was FORCED to study. You do these 'labs' which are basically worksheets that make you go through teh books and learn the information, instead of relying on what you get from a teacher. What's nice about it also, is you can pretty much work on your own time, there's an assignment due every week, but it's not like you have to be in class certain days, and certain hours.

If you're self-disciplined enough to get the work done on your own it may be a great way for you to get both classes out of the way. I took Micro and A&P 201 together, while raising 6 kids, granted, I didn't work, but I was still pretty busy, and didn't have much of a problem with either class.

Actually, I wanted to take one of the classes online through Rio, or both...but because I have financial aid through MCC, they said I couldn't do it without paying for it myself, and I don't have the money to do that right now. I love online classes!!! I have taken many of my classes online, and have done very well in them. Now, if they would let the financial aid be reciprocal through all the Maricopa colleges, I would definitely be doing that. In the meantime, I am still trying to figure out how to do this without ending up having to wait another semester to apply for nursing school, or end up so overwhelmed by having two tough teachers and not do well in either one.

My friend ran into that same problem. It's too bad they don't link all the MCC schools up so that people can go to more than one at a time. You almost have to to get your nursing pre-req's anyway because the classes are all filled within a couple of minutes of the start of registration. Good luck.

I took BIO 202 and Micro together at MCC and it's doable. Are you registered for them yet? If so, who do you have? If you have McGaughey for 202 you've got it made. If you have Kikkert for Micro, that's another story. I would ask around at school for other's opinions on the teachers you have for Spring before dropping these classes. Even with a full-time job, you can do it. It's a lot of work but it's achievable.

I wasn't able to get into McGaughey's class (It filled up fast! I think everyone wants to get into her class! I was there an hour and a half before registration started, and still didn't get into her class.) I have Aaron for A&P 2 (I hear he's tough, but the class is doable.) But I do have Kikkert for Micro, and with the information I have gotten about him, I am thinking about dropping it. I don't know yet.

Hi Terre,

How many pre-reqs do you have left to take? Have you thought about taking any over the summer? I took Chemistryover the summer. You live and breathe it for 8 weeks but it's alot easier than taking it during the regular semester ..

Hi Mary,

I only have two prereqs left, A&P 2 and Micro (since they are taking out the CNA requirement.) That's why I am in such a dilemma. If I take them both this semester and pass, I'm done with it and can apply to the MCC program during this semester. But I also don't want to sacrifice my GPA by trying to force too much into one semester and not do as well. I have thought about summer courses, but I'm not sure what I want to do. I'm still doing some major decision making. At least I am already registered in both classes, so if I think I can handle it, I will keep the classes. If I decide I want to take them separately, I can always find another class to take in place of micro that will keep my credit hours up for my financial aid. I dunno yet!!!! :banghead:

PS...I love this board! It's so nice finding so many local people who have all had to deal with the same questions and struggles. I don't feel so alone out there!!!!

Hi Terre,

Have you met with the Nursing advisor yet? I thought I heard somewhere that in order to apply during Spring application week you still needed to have your CNA. I'm not exactly sure about that so you may want to check that out. If that is the case, you could take either A&P or Micro during spring, then take the other one during summer and apply during the summer application week.

A&P 2 and Micro are both pretty intense classes. The lab practicals take alot of preparation. It really would be like you are taking 4 classes instead of 2 because of all the work required for it. I think it is doable if you don't work full time.

Anyway, as you said, you're registered for both, it wouldn't hurt to see what the schedules are like. That should give you a better idea on whether or not you think you can do it.

Kikkert is tough but there are those out there that actually like his teaching style. He came into our ethics class and gave a talk on cloning..he was really good. I just have a hard time taking him seriously because he looks like a leprechaun or a really big gnome....:rotfl:

For A&P 2 I think you have James (Aaron is his first name). He is another tough one. I'd go to the first few classes and drop within the period where you can get your money back....if it looks like too much for you. Mary is right, it would be like 4 classes instead of 2 because of the labs. Micro there was a lot of outside preparation for the next lab.

Another thought, you could see if you could get on the wait list for McGaughey's class. There's always people who drop.

On the CNA requirement, I spoke with Ms. Earp (who teaches the CNA) and she said it was passed that the CNA requirement is going away. They're still offering the class but it will no longer be a requirement. I have yet to see an updated nursing application though.
