Is Banner ever going to start hiring external new grads in AZ???

U.S.A. Arizona

I graduated back in December of 2011 with my ADN and started working as a home health nurse in February of 2012. I am frustrated because this is not the job I envisioned for myself. I thought that with this experience it would look good on a resume when I applied to hospitals but apparently not because it is not considered bed-side. I also started back in school to get my BSN last month but now I am starting to feel that it may be a wasted effort as I have read other posts :/ I have applied to hundreds of jobs on the Banner website (as well as others) since I received my license in January to no avail and I am starting to feel nauseated about what my future holds in this career. I love being a nurse but I want a chance to showcase my skills/knowledge and I feel I am not even being given a fair chance. Is anyone else experiencing this or is it just me? Is Banner planning on hiring external new grads soon? I just need a little guidance or some inside info...

I had a hard time finding my first hospital job, spent nearly three years in LTC/SNFs before I was hired into a hospital. What is funny is that I was hired the same month that I graduated with my BSN.

There were a few reasons stated as to why I was hired.

#1 My BSN.

#2 I was professional enough, and dedicated to the specialty, to join several specialty nursing organizations.

#3 Perseverance.

Try Chandler, they have been hiring new grads in bulk waves lately, I think in anticipation for the new tower to be built.

I dont know if you graduated with me. I graduated Dec 2011, licensed in Jan 2012 and no job yet. Been in a BSN since March. Dont know what to do, might be moving out of here. So many new nurses here and not enough opportunities.

You may have! There are so many nursing programs going on here it is unbelievable :/ I wish I was warned about the market before I got into this. I also wish I could move and start fresh somewhere else but my spouse has an excellent job and I don't foresee us leaving. I guess I will just suck it up until then and continue on to my BSN and cross my fingers that that might help me along the way :/

Things will get better - depends on the economy improving. Once that happens, lots of RN(s) will want to leave the workforce or at least go part-time. I am sorry you are experiencing a tough time breaking into a hospital. When I finished, my classmates and I were direct-hired directly into specialty units (NICU, ED, ICU, etc.). Get the BSN, join some professional organizations, and do your best networking. It is all who you know - the right person can make a phone call. If you know the hiring managers, you can easily jump to the head of the line when they are reviewing applications. Start attending regional meetings of the AZ Nurses Association and you will rub elbows with all sorts of connected folks.

Yes. I was just offered an interview. I am external and graduated with my BSN in May.

Specializes in Emergency/Trauma.

I was just hired at a Banner hospital, as an external applicant with an ADN from December 2011. I have been working the past 7 months in outpatient women's health/surgery and am in a RN-BSN program, so I think those things helped.

eta: tell EVERYONE you know you are looking for hospital work. It may be coincidence, but I received my interview 4 days after I told someone, who knew someone, who knew someone etc etc, who works there.

Thanks for the advice! I guess I will put my best foot forward in knowing at least I'm moving in the right direction. I actually doubled-up on my BSN courses so I can graduate sooner! Here's to hoping :)

Try Banner Boswell 5th floor. They hire ADN new grads and always have openings.

Thanks again, everyone! With a little patience and perseverance I finally was offered a Banner position today!! I am so excited!!
