I just got my acceptance letter this week for the Spring 2011 LPN fast track program at Gateway!! The letter came in the mail saying that I got into the evening program (which was my first choice). I applied in April, so I only waited one semester! I feel so unprepared, but I don't know what to do to prepare myself! Any suggestions?
    Congrats on gtting in.

Now... Go down to the bookstore and start looking through the "Made Easy" books, do as many NCLEX practice questions as you can, don't worry if you don't get alot right at first, its all about the style. read the tips on how to answer the questions and the rationals as well. Also read up on the Nursing Process and practice as much medical abbreviations as you can. Memorize how a drop of blood goes through the heart/body. Also review your CNA skills. The first test is on a TON of chapters.

Steven H, So did you get selected after they sent you an email stating that you were on the waiting list?

Yes actually. The day I sent her an email, she sent me the email stating that I didn't make it. Then I received a letter out of the blue.....I originally put my app in in april of this year.

i just received my letter in the mail stating i was accepted to the day cohort for spring 2011. i actually didn't have to wait at all. i applied in october and was notified in november that i didn't get in but i checked my po box yesterday and there sat a letter from gateway stating i got in for the day program, which was my second choice. anyone else out there starting the day program at gcc?

i have some questions about the schedule. it looks like tues, is 12-430pm and thursday and friday are from 8-4pm. then i see clinicals starting in february on wed, thur, and friday but no times. i’m just concerned about the times since i need to work to make a living somehow in between this program.

you'll only have clinicals on one of those three days. check the class days and times, too. there are some extra lab days thrown in, but for the most part your schedule should be 2 class days, 1 clinical day.

Clinical times depend on clinical sites. Semester 1 we had clinical Thursday and Friday from 6a-2p. Semester 2 we had clinical for Med/Surg Thurs and Fri evening from 2p-10p and Peds and L&D clinicals on 1 weekend each Sat & Sun 7a-7p ... other groups had clinicals on Saturdays only for 12 hours. It sooo varies with each Cohort.

For both of my semesters, we had clinicals 6:45am to 7:15 pm. I believe block one had 8 clinicals, and block 2 had 11 regular med-surg clinicals, 2 for OB, and 2 for peds @ totally different facilities. There were a couple of weeks in block 2 where we had both a med-surg clinical and an ob or peds clinical in the same week. Those are hard weeks, because you'll still probably have quizzes/tests to study for.

At the beginning of block 2 we had a couple of weeks of "lab" days, those are counted the same as clinicals, miss more than one total for the semester, and you get to try again next semester. If you're late for a clinical or a lab day, its the same as an absence. If you don't have a stethoscope, fingerprint card, etc, you're not "in uniform" and you can be sent home.

The last 3 weeks of block two were easier - only one lecture a week, (our clinicals were all done) one week we had the HESI, another we just had a quiz, then the final.

Probably 50% of my class had jobs - it's still do-able while you're working, but good time-management skills and a flexible schedule will make it a lot easier.
