I'm in the RN program at Gateway now, and just started block 3. I am an advanced placement student.

Does anyone have any tips for block 3 and how to pass? I feel a little discouraged because there are so many students in my class who are repeating block 3, and I do not want to be one of them! The pace seems to move very fast

Any tips or advice is appreciated! :)

I don't recall it being very difficult. IMHO, the majority of people who flunked usually did so because they had extraneous life events interfere with their studies (divorce, childcare, unsupportive spouse, etc.). Show up for class/clinicals. Take really good notes (I never read the book) and pay attention in class. You will be fine...you will be amazed at how many folks have an out-of-control personal life...PM me if you need anything else.

When I was in school, it seemed that our advanced placement students in block 3 always had a hard time, for no fault of their own. They felt they were ill prepared for the RN program, and our instructors agreed.

I would highly encourage talking to your instructors as soon as possible to ask for studying advice and referrals to tutors. Our instructors were more than willing to help the students who showed that they wanted to improve, as much as they could. Block 3 goes pretty fast, so if you start out in a hard place you have to correct it quickly or it will just snowball.

Good luck!

Thank you! Were there any specific NCLEX or RN study books that you would recommend for practice? Did you join a study group?

Miteacher,

How long did it take you to get into Block 3? I am waiting for LVN license and would like to apply at Gateway RN program 3rd block.

Did you need one year experience as LPN/LVN before starting program for 3rd block?

I did not join a study group, because they didn't work for me. Everyone is different. If you are struggling now without one, then definitely try one.

For NCLEX practice books, I had the Saunders one that comes with a CD-ROM of practice questions. I did 75 questions every day, from block 1 until the end. The book itself was of no use to me. The book that I did read was the Evolve HESI NCLEX-RN study book. That one was great.

Hope things are going much better for you now!

Yes, things are much better for me now. I have nearly a 90% and have been using mostly the powerpoints and the yellow Saunders NCLEx book. I have not joined a study group because I enjoy working alone....Thank you for your advice! I think it just took some getting used to and I have been fine since the first quiz. I think the next few weeks will go by fast and we are done the 2nd week of December...I'm just hoping I pass! From what it sounds like, we had a lot of people repeating because of the final.

I knew you would catch on and do fine! It's always the first test that gets people. I did not think the final was hard. Although I think Med/Surg was crazy, I want to say there were a lot of medications to know on it, with labs.

Anyway good luck!! Block 4 is a killer and goes faster than 3 did!

You could do the lpn to rn program. Now there might be a wait but its still faster than doing the rn program and waiting over two years!
