GATEWAY CC Surgical Technology for the Operating Room Nurse

  1. Has anyone taken the Surgical Technology for the Operating Room Nurse course offered at Gateway Community College? From what I understand it's a semester of classes followed by a semester of clinicals. I'm considering enrolling for Spring 2018. I'm trying to decide if it's worth the cost vs. applying to OR positions and hoping for adequate training/orientation. Someone who works in the program told me that it's not unusual for students to be hired while doing their clinicals in the program. I'm med surg tele now but would like to transition to OR in the next year. Thanks in advance for any answers or guidance!

Im also interested in moving to the OR, have been a TELE nurse for close to 3 years now. I'd be interested to hear if you've had any luck switching specialties, or ended up enrolling in the course.

I am still considering Gateway's STORN program for the spring

I did go to the HonorHealth clinical open house events last week at JCL and DV and learned they will probably be posting peri-op 101 positions late this year or early next year. I was told these positions are very competitive with 30+ apps per posting. They will post one per hospital "if the budget allows".

One of the directors I talked to was familiar with Gateway's program and had some positive things to say. The other had never heard of it.
