Failed Block 2

U.S.A. Arizona

Hello fellow nursing students and nurses!

I WAS part of the CEP program with NAU/EMCC this Spring '16 semester. However I failed the block. Actually 8 of us did total. Crazy, right? I couldn't believe how many of us did not succeed. Well we were told we needed to contact the other Maricopa CC's to request a seat into the upcoming Fall semester. Now after two weeks we are all waiting on only 3 of the 7 colleges to respond. The rest are full. How likely is it for a readmit/CEP student to get back in for the next semester? I'm afraid with my terrible hesi score and proctored points from this semester I won't have a fighting chance against others (we were told they base entrance off these two things for readmission). I'm worried I may have to go through the entire process again (if two semesters pass and we haven't been accepted we have to start the entire process over-wait list, acceptance and start at block one). Any thoughts, ideas? I'm going mad refreshing my mailbox every 15 minutes waiting for an acceptance email. Thank you all in advance!

This is very common. 8 failures is not crazy at all. At SCC I started with 88 in block one and we lost half. In second block we had 80 because people repeating 2nd were with us. We again lost about half. That would be 40 students failed. Block 3 started with 67. Lost about 20-30 I think. Block 4 started with almost 50. Graduate with about 40 students.

Not everyone will pass and not everyone is meant to.

Keep applying. Many schools have their own repeating students to take care of before they will accept transfer students. They will also accept students who passed and want to transfer. Why will EMCC not let you repeat with them?

Thanks MrsBoots for your response! I've been told numerous times it isn't unusual but I think it's seems bizarre because I didn't realize how many of us were in jeopardy going into our final. And I don't think some of whom failed realized it either. I'm not sure why EMCC won't take us. I just received an email yesterday from the nursing director stating she would review the readmission requests and decide then. But the way she said it made me think we wouldn't all get accepted back. They have 26 students going into block 2 for Fall. I think 8 more wouldn't be an issue.

I just graduated at gateway. We started with about 41 and graduated with 14. 8 doesn't sound unusual.

To get back in they determine how many students are allowed for each class by the number of clinical spots available, not classroom seating. For my block 4 we were capped at 30 students because that was all the clinical spots that were available.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

I know EMCC is trying to take less students though. I just finished block 1 at EMCC this semester and we had 28 to start with (only 30 spots available to begin with). This next semester they are only taking 24 students for block 1. So going into block 2 with 26 of us I would doubt they would take more than 2 people (maybe 4) back since they are scaling it down.

Sorry to hear about failing block 2. I would love to get any insight from you (private message if you want) about how to study for my upcoming block 2 at EMCC. I'm planning to study F&E and drugs hard over the summer to prepare but since you just went through it, any guidance on what to focus on would be helpful. Hope you hear from a school soon!

F&E is important but not nearly the most difficult thing to master in block 2. You will be going over pathophysiology and interventions for whole body systems. Some seem to find cardiac the most difficult, while others find Neuro the most difficult. F&E is included in the renal section of lecture (or at least it was at SCC) and that was one of the easier sections to master. If you have a good instructor they will review it well. That and ABGs. Honestly take the summer off until the last few weeks or you will get burnt out before you even start block 2. You need a mental break. Then a few weeks before, review things like the pathway of blood and the anatomy of the heart, anatomy of the brain and the cranial nerves, and general body physiology.

I want to point out that it might be different for us upcoming block 2 students as we are following the new curriculum. We're only the second cohort to go through the new block 2.

I did forget about that part. The content will still be the same, I believe psych was moved from block 4 so the amount of med/surg content in each semester was adjusted. I can't imagine they would ace cardiac and Neuro for another semester, but I could totally be wrong on that.

We did a bunch of cardio in block 1 and I believe the rest was moved to block 4 for critical care.

Thanks for being so helpful!

We had cardiac in all blocks. What you learn about cardiac is built on every semester. But again, they may have changed that. I can't imagine they would reduce cardiac to just 1st and 4th though. Critical care cardiac is very different then regular med/surg or tele cardiac. Block 1 for me was all about CHF, CAD, HTN, HF. The common stuff. Block 2 was more anatomy and physiology of the heart and more heart conditions. Block 3 had minimal because of having peds and OB. Then block 4 was all about EKGs, tx for MI, heart blocks, ACLS protocols and such.

I I am not the end all say all though because the curriculum is different then when I went through it. I do hope you get at least some cardiac in block 2 though. Everything we learned about cardiac over the entire program would be difficult to learn in just two of the 4 semesters. I am curious how the new curriculum works outs. Hopefully for the better.

Oh wow! Yeah, from this post we just barely touched on cardiac. I'm super glad they broke up Peds and OB though! Med/Surg is now blocks 2-4 as well.

My cohort was the first to start the new curriculum at EMCC and we had 5 weeks of psych. The rest was Ned surg. Yes, hit on your F&E. Other than that you will cover plenty of respiratory and cardiac. Good luck.
