ASU Summer of 2011 applicants!

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

hello all you asu nursing hopefuls,

well, i decided to start this thread to get all of the arizona state bsn majors that are applying for the 16-month summer program starting in may of 2011 together. i went to the advancement workshop on 11/12/2010 and saw so many people there. i can't even imagine how many people will be applying. with only 100 seats open, it's going to be tough, although that's probably an understatement. the advancement scores for summer cycles have been lower than the traditional 24-month program in the past, but with all the changes that asu decided to make :uhoh3:, i think things will be different this time around. i don't think my chances are very good compared to other applicants. i have a 3.81 gpa... realistically, i'll probably have to get like a 92% on the teas to be competitive against students that have a 4.0, which seems like most do. i don't think that's possible...but i gotta stay optimistic. with replacement course for sciences being virtually impossible to take (seeing how you need so many pre-reqs for them which the nursing program doesn't require), i'm starting to worry:crying2: .however, all i can do is study my butt of for the teas and see what happens.

anyhoo..... feel free to share comments and stories, ask questions, and connect with other students that are applying for the summer 2011 program. this is just a way for us to get through the long wait until april arrives and to provide encouragement for each other. :heartbeat

Hey All! Sorry I'm late to this webstring of messages. Didn't know it existed until a friend told me of it today, but some of you may know me: I'm the old short guy who was on the Alternate List last semester. I got in this time, though. Got the letter today. However, a friend opened it, as I'm on active duty at the Pentagon. Got recalled. Damn Libyans. I'm told I have to send the acceptance letter back so it's in the hands of the Powers That Be by Wednesday. Seems an awfully short period of time in which to have to respond. Think they'll cut me some slack while I'm defending the country? (OK, ok....I admit it: Not so much defending the country as picking out targets for people I don't know to bomb the living snot out of other people I don't know)

I can't talk to the Powers That Be until Monday at the earliest. Anyone every run across this situation before?

Moe

Hi Moe, Congrats!

You should just get your friend to scan/email you the letter. You can sign and fax it over to the student services office in case you aren't able to physically go there. :)

So they both start on May 16 or you were just referring to Mayo? If so, question still applies, when does ASU Downtown start and when is the program complete. I don't remember reading this anywhere.

i sent your question to another student i know who entered the program with a previous bechelors degree. ill get back to you on what she says

Congrts to all of you that made it in. I am in the 2010 summer program. Let me know if you have any questions. Enjoy your time off before you start.

ok here is what she said:

Scholarships are still fair game since the nursing program is an undergraduate program. It doesn't matter that you already have a degree. Some professional nursing associations have scholarships for nursing students. Grants are totally out of the question since nursing will be a second degree. Make sure to fill out the FAFSA in order to get federal financial aid (loans), plus many scholarships use it to look at need and may be required for them. Hope this helps

I already have a BA (non-medical) from years ago. I also have everything paid by the Veterans Administration educational program, and my daughters have done everything regarding their college financial stuff themselves with loans, grants, my money, etc., so I don't know anything about scholarships, grants, etc. for myself. Sorry.

To the person who PM'd me (I cannot PM until 15 posts :/): If you already have a degree, you may not be eligible for grants but still fill out a FAFSA! Go to google and type in FAFSA it's free so make sure you aren't paying to file it. FAFSA can make you eligible for loans and also (like someone said above) some scholarships. ANYONE can apply for scholarships if they fit the standards. One woman I know got a full ride for nursing school and she was a 2nd degree. I think working 10 or so hours is definitely doable in school too, I am almost finished with my first semester and have been averaging 10-12 hours per week and maintaining good grades! I really don't have much more advice on the financials part except make sure to file for taxes if you have been a full time student, you can get the money you spent for books, uniforms, etc back! I hope I helped a little! Congratulations to all the incoming Jr 1's =]

I know you sent me a PM but I can't respond to PMs yet. I would try applying for the FAFSA anyways just to see if you can at least get a subsidized loan. You could also try joining one of the ROTC programs at ASU through Navy, Army, or Air Force and they could pay for your school in return for your commitment to the branch too but that's going to be a lot of hard work.

I didn't get a letter but from the looks of the forum, I didn't get in (crappy way of finding out, huh) :(

Do they still send rejection letters??

I did get in to the GCC/NAU Pilot Program so I will be starting that in the Fall, but I would have really preferred ASU.

EMT Jeremy-

You should have received a letter indicating something, even a rejection letter. Call and talk to your adviser. Also, don't give up yet! You may be an alternate! Let us know either way.

Does anyone have classes in their schedule yet? I have one that just appeared in mine, but I know the letter said we should have 4. Also, does anyone know what they mean by learning community assignment and how that will impact class schedules?
