ASU Summer of 2011 applicants!

  1. 0
hello all you asu nursing hopefuls,

well, i decided to start this thread to get all of the arizona state bsn majors that are applying for the 16-month summer program starting in may of 2011 together. i went to the advancement workshop on 11/12/2010 and saw so many people there. i can't even imagine how many people will be applying. with only 100 seats open, it's going to be tough, although that's probably an understatement. the advancement scores for summer cycles have been lower than the traditional 24-month program in the past, but with all the changes that asu decided to make , i think things will be different this time around. i don't think my chances are very good compared to other applicants. i have a 3.81 gpa... realistically, i'll probably have to get like a 92% on the teas to be competitive against students that have a 4.0, which seems like most do. i don't think that's possible...but i gotta stay optimistic. with replacement course for sciences being virtually impossible to take (seeing how you need so many pre-reqs for them which the nursing program doesn't require), i'm starting to worry .however, all i can do is study my butt of for the teas and see what happens.

anyhoo..... feel free to share comments and stories, ask questions, and connect with other students that are applying for the summer 2011 program. this is just a way for us to get through the long wait until april arrives and to provide encouragement for each other. :heartbeat

Hi! Thanks for starting this thread. Good luck to you! I also have a 3.814 GPA with a 86% TEAS score. Unfortunately I did not get into Spring 2011 but I am hopeful for Summer. Have you taken the TEAS exam yet? I am planning to retake the exam in hopes for a higher score. My concern is the number of applicants considering the new rules. Last summer only had 81 applicants but I fear this summer will be much higher. Look forward to reading what everyone has to say!

    Hey there SEA3347

Wow, we are basically in the same boat here. My GPA is what is bringing me down, but taking any more replacement courses is just impossible at this point because the ones I need are the sciences and those require like 3 different pre-reqs that the nursing program doesn't require. Anyhoo...I don't really know what to expect for this summer. I was so confident (based on previous summer advancement scores and the fact that less people applied since it's more expensive) that I had a great shot at getting into the program for the summer until ASU decided to make all these changes. Based on how many people were at the advancement workshop I went to, it looks like there could be a lot of students applying because everyone is freaking out about the changes. It's definitely scary for me because I've waited so long to get into nursing school.

I am actually planning on taking the TEAS at the end of January.... it is the deciding factor

Definitely going to have my fingers, toes, and eyes crossed for the both of us!!!! Hopefully April gets here soon!

Hey all, I'm hoping to get in to summer 2011 as well. Haven't taken the TEAS yet. If I don't get into ASU in Summer, then I'm applying to NAU in the Fall. I just can't keep up with the new requirements or the competitive GPA anymore. Perhaps the biggest factor is the fact that NAU will give me credit for the 1.5yrs I worked in an ER/Trauma Center.

I can't even tell you how many upper division students that come in for their ED clinicals and don't have a clue what's going on. Not to be cocky, but my experience has really given me a head start for nursing school. I can't tell you how much I've learned- procedures, lab tests and values, med names, doses, uses, Xray/CT, EKG interpretation(including cardiac arrhythmias and how they are treated), and most of all- hands on skills- IV/phlebotomy, Foley insertion, anything involving patient care I've pretty much done, seen, or heard of. I would much rather wait till Fall for a program that gives me credit for my experience. Plus they'll let me skip Pathology since I took PathoPhys :P

Just my 2 cents. Good luck to everyone! Lets keep each other updated on this advancement!

How competitive has ASU become? I've been going back and forth between ASU and GCU! For ASU, I have a select GPA of 4.0 but havent taken my TEAS test yet! I completed my pre-reqs at a community college. But anyways, I'm just curious if anyone here knows what my chances are of getting into ASUs nursing program! :/ Thank you!

Info given at the advancement workshop:

    -----------------------Cuttoff----------Avg GPA-------Avg TEAS score
Summer 2010------5.447----------3.877----------N/A (They used the NET then)
    Fall 2010-------------5.569----------3.970----------86.9
    Spring 2011---------5.597-----------3.977---------86.0

"Cutoff" refers to the lowest GPA advanced in that cohort.

Summer 2011 will be a little different:
They have 100 spots which is more than they've ever had. The advisors that ran the workshop said they've seen about 100 people so far, and this was at the second to last workshop. I'm hoping that, even if 125 people apply, I'd be smarter than 20% of applicants. My Select GPA is a 3.81, so I'd need an 82% on the TEAS to get a 5.45 Application GPA.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks Jeremy for the updated information about the number of applicants they have seen going through!!! It gives me hope for Summer as my GPA is about the same as yours. Good luck on your TEAS. I am retaking mine at the end of January in hopes for a higher score.

Wow! I really hope that there are only 125 applicants. With all the changes that ASU is making, I figured so many more people would try to apply for the summer program than previous years. I guess we will just all try to keep each other posted and see what happens For now, it's really time to focus on studying for this TEAS test. I'm starting to get a little nervous here, taking the test on Jan. 28th :uhoh21:

    Hi guys!

I'm planning on applying for the summer program as well. I take the TEAS on Friday and I'm really nervous!! I've been having trouble finding any information on actually taken the TEAS. I've took one of the online practice tests tonight and was wondering if anyone else has taken them and if it is at all similar to the actual test? Also, this is kind of stupid question... but you are allowed to use scratch paper, right? I like to know what to expect before tests and it freaks me out that you can't retake it unless you fail or apply a second time!

    Hi again everybody!

So I took the TEAS test this morning and I'm so happy I'm all done with that. I got a 93.3%, so all that stressing was for nothing, although I did study my butt of the last few days prior to the test.

Anyways, I'd love to hear from some of you about how you're doing with the TEAS and advancement and what not! This is such a scary process and it'd be great to talk to people who are all going through the same thing.

I was also wondering if anyone knows anything about the Mayo program. I'd really like to get into the Mayo program versus the downtown program, but ASU provides such little information about it, even when I talked to an advisor! I know she told me it was competetive and you have to be ranked within the top 40 to have a shot... so that's a little scary. Let me know if you have more information about Mayo, because I'd love to know what I'm really getting myself into before I put Mayo as my first choice.

I'd love to hear from you all and how you're all making it through this process... I know that its stressing me out like crazy and I'm sure some of you are probably feeling the same way!
