I must agree with the OP so far as things getting nasty on certain subjects here if one disagrees with certain people. I don't understand why this is tolerated, other than it seems to be a clique-ishness that seems to develop with some members given more leeway than others.

I have taken a break for this board for this very reason and now that I'm back, I feel this needs to be addressed so I likely will be reporting rude posts from those who seem to be repeat offenders that are allowed to be rude IMHO.

Everyone here should do the same. If we are to be fair. ALL here must be held to the same standard IMO.
Actually, I have seen borderline "nastiness" lately but not from old members.

I think the key is to go to the person first in a pm . .. not satisfied then go to the mods.

Tweety - no way, no how are you rude or mean.

I've noticed if one is in the minority opinion on a subject, things get very mean. Subjectivity is tossed out the window. There are things in my Nursing career that I have witnessed, heard and experienced and I would love to share the stories and my viewpoints, but this board tends to steer towards a more conservative slope. I watch and censor what I say all of the time. I find so sad. God forbid I might be truthful then be banned!
As you can see by the number of posts, I've been enjoying allnurses, for the most part, for quite awhile. It is a great place and there is a ton of great information here. The one drawback I've noticed is that there is a definite high school mentality and if you aren't in the popular group, the experience isn't going to be as positive for you. It's not like the real world, but that's mainly because people will say more on a message board than they will face to face. In a way, there is a refreshing honesty to that, but thin skin will be penetrated. You quickly realize when you are in the minority. Because there are nurses from all over the world here, cultural aspects come into play alot, as well, which can mean you are even more of a minority than you would be in your local group. Many of us come and go, taking a break from time to time, which is a healthy thing to do. Overall, it's still a great site with alot of intelligent conversation and insight going on.

Some would beg to differ. Which illustrates my point, some interpret rudeness differently.

Being one of the lone vocal conservatives (there are probably plenty of nonvocal ones) you're tough as nails and I'm not surprised you don't find me rude.

Ditto on the moderators! They are awesome.

When I first started coming here I too felt like it was hard to break in . . .but it is like real life. Sometimes you are just the new kid on the block. You just have to speak up. There is no real "clique" . . . . if you just take a look at the break room thread (I realize this is premium member terrority) there have been so many people come and go there in the last year. It really isn't the same group of folks all the time. No one purposely says, we are the coolest posters here and you can't post. That does not go on.

And sbic dear - you are hardly an outsider. We've had many conversations and actually agreed a couple of times. :-)

I have to agree that it depends on perception . . . sometimes what some people think is debate is seen as flames.

I have a friend right now on the BB who is always teasing me about being part of the group but then she only manages one or two posts a month. How can you get to know someone if you don't venture into the conversation? She was here this morning with her son - he and my son are friends - and we talked about a couple of the threads and I said she needed to post more.

I'm tempted to tell you her name so you could all pm her. :-)

Anyway, jump on in . . . I felt left out too but not anymore.

Oh blah blah blah . . . . you are not rude. Sheesh, funny and articulate and compassionate and friendly and helpful . .. .whoops, making you sound like one of the Seven Dwarfs here.

Seriously - do not take those rude comments seriously Tweety. I'll let ya know if you've been rude. ;-)

Yes, we've had some good give and take. And, we did agree once, didn't we? :chuckle I didn't say the entire senior class shunned me!

Well, I'm not part of the real Senior class. I'm more like a sophomore.

I was a veteren of other message boards prior to joining this one. I used to have webtv and they have lots of message boards there. So I knew, like when you walk into a party of friends and coworkers, they all know each other. They may say "nice to meet you", but it was up to me to jump in and participate.

Obviously, since some of us spend more time posting than others it may feel to an outsider that we are cliquish.

Look at Siri, she just joined and she's a mod already. There are other newbies too that have become part of the allnurses family.

There are even message boards here like the International Board and the CRNA board that have groups of "cliques" in them.

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't find this message board inclusive and cliquish. Yes, there are friendships here and people who talk back and forth and have a history, but is that such a bad thing?

I think it takes becoming a Premium member, time and a lot of posts before getting comfortable.
