Job Outlook for New Nurses in Alabama

I know that with the current economy being in such a desperate state some hospitals have put up freezes on hiring new nurses. I was wondering if anyone knew if this has become the case in the Alabama area? If so, what parts of Alabama? Any comments would be greatly appreciated:typing

I know there are slim pickings for new grads in Birmingham right now. With Carraway closing, there was a sudden influx of nurses and with the economy, the hospitals are trying to wait and see...

We have been told there are not as many jobs in Birmingham as there was a year ago. There are still jobs but you may not get exactly what you want or the hours you want. We are also hearing that alot of hospitals are not repaying loans any more.

it seems like you see SO many open RN positions on all of the hospital websites. I guess those are for experienced positions perhaps???

If you go and look now there are not that many. New RN's cant do any Flexi positions..you have to have one yr before you can do them. They wont hire new grads into CVOR either.

Like I said in my other post. There are jobs out there but fewer than a yr ago. Also you might not work day shift in the unit you want. Some areas in the country new grads can not even get a job so at least we are lucky not to be that bad yet.

Magnolia, as 2bnursestef said, there really are not that many open. There may be a list, but when you start looking at it closely, you will they are mostly part-time, CRNP, NNP, tech and secretarial or are Staff II or III which require 2-5yrs experience. Also, when you think that in May there will be over 100 new BSNs from UAB alone, plus UA, Auburn, JVS and a whole bunch of 2yr programs...

Banking at least will get a bailout from the gov't...what will nurse's get??? So far gov't hasnt helped the nursing shortage. Just my :twocents:

actually I just read a article that some of the stimulus funds for health care would be to help with the bottleneck of nursing school applicants. ie good candidates turned away because the schools do not have room to increase acceptance due to they have teacher shortages..due to a Master lever RN can make much more working on the floor than teaching. Do a search, I just read the article a few days ago.

Huntsville area has a freeze. Benefits are being cut and RN's are having to take 4 hours off a month with or without pay. I will not be surprised when lays-offs occur. I do not believe any PRN employees are getting the hours either.

Thanks for all the great input. I graduate in May and was wondering if anyone has any updates on hiring new RN's in AL. What does the job outlook look like the May grads in your area??
