Jeff State Spring 2013 Hopefuls

Hello and most importantly, a BIG "CONGRATULATIONS" :up: to everyone who has received their acceptance emails and phone calls. I am still waiting on mines anticipating the phone call and or email. For those of you who have received an acceptance email; I have a question. Does it come to the email you placed on the application or to the Jeff State Email. Thanks! And again Congratulations to all!

It came to my personal e-mail, I guess that's what I put on the application. I also have it marked as my preferred e-mail through my pipeline account.

Are they done notifying people of acceptance yet? I had good points ( 209) but I just realized that I made a mistake on my nursing application (kept a copy for my records) It asked for points on the TEAS V and stupid me, I put my percent correct and not my points out of 150 I had 105/150 but I put 70 since that was my percent correct. So unless they caught my mistake, it looked like my total points was 174 I am so sad :no: I had A's in Math 100 and both anatomys so I was totally expecting to get in for Spring

I don't know if that would have made that much of a difference in the decision. I'm pretty sure that they look up the scores anyway to verify what everyone puts. I would definitley give them a call just to see if they're still notifying people. When I called to accept my position, the lady told me that they would get more info to me by email by this Friday. So maybe they will be making the calls up to that day.

Congratulations to all of you. I have not heard either. I hope I didn't do the same as BillieP My percent was 70.7 and I think that is what I put down, because I think it asked for the score not the points. Although very happy for all of you I am very sad for me, I feel like if I was accepted I would have heard with the rest of ya'll. 191 overall But I will be a transfer student. I took all my prereq at Lawson, so it could be that Jeff state students have priority over me.

Let's not count ourselves out here!! I just called up to Jeff State and spoke with someone in the Nursing Department and she told me that they have already selected who will be in the program; However, they are still sending out emails. She said they send them out in bulks. So let's not get discouraged we are still in the running! :yes:

I don't think they would have any reason to verify a low score but of course they would verify the scores that put people in the acceptance pile but who knows. Someone told me they thought they did it alphabetically but I'm a "P" and I know someone with a "R" last name that was notified on Monday so I just don't know.

I agree, it can't be alphabetical. I'm a "T" and I found out on Monday. Who know's?? I would give it until Friday, and if you haven't heard anything, call them. And if it doesn't happen this semester, don't give up. I was actually in the program last Spring but ended up having to retake Fundamentals. But instead of just letting me re-take the class, I had to re-apply to the program, and I didn't get back in for summer OR fall! Sorry to be a downer, I guess my point is - just don't give up! Besides, I have a feeling that they are still making calls until Friday :-) Saying prayers for everyone! I know how completely nerve racking the wait is!!

Hi! I got my acceptance email on Monday! I still can't believe it! I was hoping to use this thread as a way to get to know my future classmates! I will be at the Jefferson Campus. Good luck to everyone!

Well their policy is that you have to reapply if it's your first semester. But because I missed the deadline for summer (grades posted after application deadline) was pretty much SOL for that semester, & the director at that time decided not to just roll me into the Fundamentals (GRRRR!!!) Then, I applied for fall, but my application didn't even make it past the advisors b/c my 74 final Fundamentals grade lowered my GPA!! To say that I was angry is an understatement. So I ended up going to Lawson to take two classes during a summer mini term to pull up my GPA, & I took the TEAS again to gain some more points. So I knew that I did everything in my power to get back into the program. That's why the best advice that I can give any first semester nursing student: If you think, even for just a second, that you might not pass, go ahead and apply to the program before the deadline for the next semester (before your grades & GPA are posted!!). It'll save you almost a year of waiting. The only up side to my time off is that I know Fundamentals like the back of my hand now & I've started studying Med Surg and Peds b/c those will be in the summer semester & it's a killer!!

There's so much more advice that I can give! So sorry if it gets overwhelming :/

1. Read, Read, and Read some more!

2. The three classes that you'll have in 1st. sem are Fundametals, Health Assessment, & Pharamacolgy. There are some awesome books that even the teachers reccommend to help study for these classes. They are all by Mary Ann Hogan: Nursing Fundamental Reviews & Rationales, Health Assessment Reviews & Rationales, and Pharamacology Reviews & Rationales. I got mine from B&N, but I'm pretty sure you can find them on Amazon too. They are fantastic! I would suggest getting the Fundamental and HA one now and start reading. If you want to message me, I can tell you what to focus on the most.

3. Fundamentals (in my opinion) was the most difficult of all three classes (Pharm was the easiet b/c it's all memorization). READ, READ & READ!!

4. Learn the cranial nerves! I have a pretty clever cheat sheet on these that I can email to you if you message me.

5. The test are completely different from what you're used to. The teachers will give out info either at Orientation or on BlackBoard about how to study for nursing exams. READ it! This is what killed me in Fundamentals. I knew the info, I just was unsuccessful at the tests.

6. Don't hate the teachers. Yes, they are though. And the 1st sem teachers at Shelby Campus seem to have a bad reputation, but honestly they are fantastic. If you ever have questions or dissagree with them, set up a meeting and talk with them. Their doors have always been open to me, and I have gotten fantastic advice from them.

7. Math. This one isn't a big deal to be b/c I love math. But a lot of people are intimidated by it. There will be several different methods of calculating dosages. If you can't understand how the teacher is doing it, then ask for help. I had two ladies teaching my calculations. I had NO CLUE what one of them was doing, but the other one clicked instantly.

8. Study groups! Get in one.

9. Back to dosage cal.: Start learing conversion charts once they give you the info. (probably at orientation) (i.e. 1 tbsp = 15mL).

10. Once you start clinicals (around April for Spring sem), while you are at the hospital, don't stand back and watch!!! Jump in there & volunteer to do whatever! Clinical instructors LOVE this & and it could get you some really cool experience.

11. Oh, back to dosage cal again. You'll get 3 chances to pass your dosage cal test. If you don't get it the first time, don't freak out! You're not the only one I promise.

12. HA and Fundamental validations. This is where you get tested in the lab on taking vital signs, injections, hand washing, etc. Remember to stay calm and don't be intimidated by the teachers. This is where study groups can come in very handy b/c you can practice on each other before validations :-)
