Bevill State Nursing Program... food for thought

U.S.A. Alabama

Published

This is being posted for anybody that is considering the Bevill State Nursing program. I have heard lots of good things about the program from students that were there in the past. This is being posted as an up to date status on the program. In the past 2 weeks I have talked to two of the people in my class, 5th semester, that are having trouble doing their preceptorship. The first student was assigned to a nurse that has been off work on medical leave for a couple of months. I assumed the school would call the nurse to tell them who to expect as a precepting student this semester, not let the student try to locate the nurse and find out she is not available. The other student found out her precepting nurse had been "double booked". The school had assigned two students to her. The second student may be put in a postion where she will have to do her preceptorship during the summer, and graduate a semester after the rest of her class. Between the Sumiton and Jasper campuses, I am fairly certain these are not the only two with major problems, just all I know of personally.

Nursing school is stressful enough when the staff is doing their jobs. This is rediculous! I am just thankful I am not having problems with my precept.

You know you've really given me something to think about! I did what you suggested about looking at rn jobs in the area and while some don't come outright like uab with their "bsn preferred" stance- it's still pretty much implied. Or you need 1-2 years experience. How is a new nurse to get experience if they can't get a job!!! I seriously thought about giving up my spot at jscc And just transferring to UAB and trying fir a spit in their BSN program because of being worried i wont be able to find a job, but a advisor at both UAB abd jscc told me thst i would be able To find a job especially with me beibg a male. Even if its at a nursing home lol.And trust me I completely understand about jeff states general Ed classes. I did pretty well in English and history, but a's for my math and sciences classes- let's just say I'm no longer eligible for finical ai loans due to "lack of academic progress" the math there at jscc is extremely hard and they pride themselves in that- and the science!! Let's not even get started. I stopes 201 2 times before coming out with a C! It was just that hard! I eventually transferee to Lawson and retook 201 got a B, got a B in 202 and a B in micro and a A in chemistry. And math at jeff state- I completely flunked! I ebbed up with a B at Lawson- the teachers really work with you. That's in part I guess is why I'm kinda worried about their nursing program. I've just heard it's a really hard program! I know no nursing program is easy but jeff state takes it to whole new level from what I heard.. I'm just praying I get through it!!

If you have already been accepted into JSCC Nursing Program go there. Remember the bird in a hand saying.

Hey guys! I recieved the 1st acceptance letter from Bevill and I was wondering.... once I take the TEAS V what happens? I mean what are the required scores to make on the test to be get a final acceptance?

I got mine to!!! Only problem is I've already got accepted into jeff states rn program for the summer! #delimma! As for the teas question... I heard that as long as you have above 70% your good to go. Also I heard Everyone got accepted last year that passed the teas and if there wasn't enough room in the rn program, rn applicants got first Dibs for the Lpn program. Not sure how true that is though!

I honestly think you should go ahead and go to Jeff state! It starts sooner so I'm sure you will finish sooner and I'm sure they have a great nursing program as well! What campus did you apply for @ bevill?

Yes go to Jeff St. If you start this summer you will graduate in Dec. of 2012. If you start Bevill this fall you will not graduate until May 2013, 5 months later.

@shandra2008- sumilton was my first choice- Jasper was my second followed by Fayetteville then Hamilton.

@col_dvldog I think that's what I'm going to do is just a bit nervous about jeff state. Ive just heard that they are extremely hard, and having taken per reqs there I can definitely vouch that jeff state is no joke! But im going to give it my all and work really hard this summer and hopefully it pays off! Just hope I'm able to find a job after with this economy. Hopefully it gets better!

bevill state is on "deficient status" with the alabama state board of nursing..

that's the board that determines what is an acceptable program of nursing for you to take if you expect to become an rn in alabama.

the test scores for this school have dropped year over year so the deficient status is clearly inevitable.

you should check with the state board of nursing before selecting a school to go to. if a program is consistently "deficient", it get's dropped and you will have paid all of that tuition and not be an rn.. plus the stigma of graduating from a program that was deemed deficient.. not good.

Relax. Several people have told me the test is no problem. If you stress over tests you will be your own worst enemy. Especially in nursing school. Those tests are no joke. Most multiple choice tests you have taken have 3 wrong answer and one correct, in nursing they have 3-4 right answers and one that is most correct.

Honestly he's right! The teas isn't anything but another act/sat

get a good nights sleep. Serious.

I took the test the 1st time off the fly, no studying.. I got a 95. Took it again 6 months later trying to improve my score and I stayed up all night stressing and studying for weeks. I got a 70.

I would also make sure you check the Teas website as soon as your results are ready online because you can get a read out of the questions you missed and the exact parts of the book you need to study.

the math questions.. they had the same kinds on both of the times I took the test.

If joe can pump a pool in 8 hours and bob can do it in 5, how long would it take them to pump the pool if they did it together.. that kind of crazy work problem.. there is a formula to getting the answer so REMEMBER it.. Theres the flight and wind questions (an airplane traveling etc). its the old Train starts out going this way n the other train starts out going from this way.. how long till they meet type questions.

Science.. know your blood path, air path, digestion path, functions of certain hormones.

They throw some pre-chem questions in there about things like ionic bond and covalent bond,

Reading.. I READ the QUESTION FIRST.. THEN I read the subject area. I had 100 on that are both times.

I can't remember every thing that was on the test but I remember specifically studying those parts intentionally and both times those types of questions were on there.

Finally, just plan on taking it again. The less you pressure yourself and JUST TRUST your JUDGEMENT.. the better off you will be.

I've messed myself out of an A before by changing all my answers because I doubted myself.. and I came back and found out I was right the 1st time.
