Anyone currently in Part time St Vincents Program/ Jeff State

U.S.A. Alabama

I'm thinking about switching to the Part time program...But I would like some feedback of those who are currently in the program. I am at the Birmingham campus, and I'll just leave it at that. Any information given will be appreciated, Thanks

Jeff State under "investigation" what do you guys mean by that? Please tell me everything you know. I am trying to get into the part-time program and keep hearing negative comments about it.

Hi Magnolia, I am in the same boat and would like to hear more about this investigation. I will hopefully be starting the part time program fall 08. Just waiting to find out if I've been accepted. I work full-time and have a family and can't afford to take classes during the day. I am taking Mirco biology this summer so its one less class I won't have to worry about once I get into the program. Let me know if you need a study partner. :)

hey Jason,

Yea, I understand. I would much rather do the day program, but do not have the luxury to quit work. This is a major career change for me. I am in Pharmaceutical Sales now. I am kind of on tenterhooks waiting. I was told 4-6 weeks for acceptance/denial letters to go out. I just really wish they took part timers more than one a year. I may give up before another year rolls around. I am not taking micro this summer to save money and hopefull enjoy some vacations before I start the program!!! how many points did you have. I had 180...I hope it works! I also wish UAB was not so expensive and had a night option because I qualify for the accelerated option.

During the nursing orientation (for those applying to the fall programs) that was held earlier this month, Tiffany made a point to say that the nursing program part-time nor full time is under any kind of investigation. She said it was all rumors started by people who were upset that they didn't do well in the program or didn't get in the program.

Unfortunately... A whole class of nursing students didn't do well... Jeff State needs to clean up... And it wasn't started by students.. It was a faculty that told us that the school is under investigation. DO you actually think Tiffany would tell you the program is under investigation? When I talked to her.. she was even surprised at the amount of students that failed the Fall 2007 term....

The way gas keeps going up you better get your vacations in soon. I have all my prereqs, and programm classes completed other than the nursing classes and micro. Once I get micro out completed for the summer then I can focus all my attention on the nursing classes. That is if I get accepted. I have a total of 190pts ....so hopefully I won't have a problem getting accepted. I have read some the negative things that have been said about Jeff States program but I don't let it bother me to much. Everyone has different perspectives from their own experinces as to how difficult the program is for them. I don't expect it to be easy and have made up my mind to bust my butt to do the best I can and if its God's will things will turn out fine. Even though I haven't been accepted yet I've already been wondering what my next step will be once I'm an RN. My goal is to get my Masters. I already work for UAB and hope to stay with UAB once I'm an RN because the'll help pay for school.

I wish you the best luck Jason! You will get in with 190 pts. Just remember that you were warned about the program. You will have to take ERI's that regardless if you have an A in the class if you dont pass the ERI( passing is meeting a national average which usually is around 56-70) then you Fail the class. And belive me thats how so many students are failing out of the program. Sad things is the material on these tests are things we have never seen or have been taught!! Most pass these test by making the national average or a few points above. Just know that you need to study all that you can get your hands on. Outside material will be most helpful to you. I wish you the best because we need RN's!! Just be ready to learn everything on your own and you'll make it! God Bless

Good grief- this is the fisrt time I've heard anything bad about Jeffy Tech- That makes me nervous, because I've swiched from a psych program at UAB (for 5 years and still didn't graduate because I got bored) to nursing at JSCC, and I'm quite depending on it.

I would be 3rd generation nurse, and when I first applied to school I couldn't decide between Psych and Nursing-- I chose psych at first because I was afraid that if I went for nursing, I'd just be doing it because my mom did it. Now I realize that nursing is what I would be better at.

I'm with the_healer on this one- everyone sees thier expeiences differently. I think this will be a challenge, but one that I can make it through with a little faith in God and a lot of hard work

Thanks for the advice. Cpl questions.....I was curious...when do you graduate and does your class ever get together for study sessions outside of class.

Yes- I applied for the fall 08 term- i've been at jeffy tech before, and have never been HAPPY with their service or the amount of information they give- getting them to tell you anything is like pulling teeth.

I'm praying and I have everyone I know prays praying for me. My GPA ain't great, but I'm a hard worker and made As in my pre-reqs for nursing.

I will graduate next May ( 2009) . Yes.. our class has gotten together to study. Let me also mention that the type of questions that you will get will not be your normal type of questions. There will be 4 right answers you have to pick which is the most right. There are questions on tests that you will think I would be doing all of these at the same time but you must be able to pick which is the answer they are looking for. I would suggest you go and get a few good NCLEX books and start looking at those type of questions to prepare yourself. Its not just about reading and memorizing its about applying what you learn.First semester isn't that bad really. As you progress the questions get harder or I should say higher level( thats what our teacher call it) Second semester you will have a test every other week on a topic ex, Resp., CV, Diabetes, Surgery, F&E to name a few. Lots of material to learn and then be tested on in a short time. Its doable...dont expect A's in the class. We didnt have anyone to do that.WE had a few B's and mostly C's in that class. We only lost a few people due to the actually class. Like I said before we lost most our people due to ERI testing and Math. You have to take a math test the first day of each semester starting in second semester and have to make a 90% (basically you can miss 2 questions). So these are the two areas that we lose students. My class started with 57 and we are now down to 25 going into our 3rd semester. If I can help you ever please let me know Id be more than happy to help! Which campus are you going to? I have heard that there are difference in the two campuses.

Temprtantrum...the healer.. and anyone else... yes everyone has different experiences... But this is from someone that has been in the program.. Especially the Jefferson campus... 2bnursestef ( I think they are at the Shelby campus).... Do your research...I was advise by a Doctor to do research and talk with students that are currently in other nursing programs before I actually switch... It's just a heads up... It's one thing when one person fails.. But when over half the class... Like I said 10 out of 50 left from Fall 2007... That is a majority..that is too many students to say " Hey ya'll aren't studying"... That's a faculty issue.. But whatever school you decide to go to... Do your research... Maybe they have learn from previous classes and have changed but who knows...
