I'm a relatively new ICU nurse in a small ICU. I've found a local agency willing to hire me.
However, my concern is that my personal professional competencies are not extensive enough to float to various bigger ICU's.
So, I'd like to make a list of competencies that are needed for ICU agency/float nurses and work on trying to fill in my education in various ways (including volunteering for extra shifts at other locations, books, classes) to make my competency list "decent".
Any experienced ICU agency nurses willing to help out?
Here's what I might think of to include but I'd like to hear from a pro...
ventilator experience
assisting with intubations, tracheotomies, upper and lower GI scopes, central line insertions, cardioversions,
ACLS
emergency drugs
bronchoscopy assist
chest tube insertion assist
chest tube removal assist
cardiac calculations
ABG's
intra hospital transport of vent patients
medical management of hyper and hypotension
Any suggestions of books, resources to bone up on critical care nursing would be greatly appreciated!
I've looked for the CCRN audio program by Laura Gasparus Vonfolio with no success. Any tips on where to obtain this resource, if it is still recommended would also be appreciated.
Thank you so much!
