What do you think is happening? Are people not getting sick or is that the nurses that don't get cancelled are working their butts off?
I applied to a HH agency and was told that I would be per diem. They would call me the day before if they had a visit for me to go to.
In speaking to the bookkeeper at the agency, she said they are busy and have two somewhat fulltime RNs and the rest are LVNs. So I'm thinking they utilize their LVNs to the fullest and RNs (more $$$) only when necessary.

You should speak with your staffing coordinator and offer to go out on LVN level calls at the LVN rate of pay if you really want to work that much. RNs work LVN level cases all the time, but they usually get the LVN rate, not always, but usually. Just ask.

I don't know exactly, but it seems to me that this job is the nursing supervisor's job with an emphasis on the patient cases. They would be responsible for the RN visit, updating the plan of care for the doctor's signature, and communicating with the doctor and other members of the disciplinary team to insure that up to date orders are in place. Anything to manage the case, to include communicating with the patient and patient family to make sure they are happy with the care they are receiving. Specific duties might differ from one agency to another based upon how they utilize their RNs. There is a forum on case management that might have more complete info on this.

Good luck with your job interview. I think case management would be a good job. I've managed some of my cases and I really didn't do anything different than I would have done anyway, except I didn't do the things an RN does for the case. When I get the RN license I will probably look for case management positions.

Cali
Are you an LVN, CNA? How long in HH. Get your license, you would be an awesome RN. You have such a great amount of knowledge.

Thanks for the advice.

I am sorry that this is happening, but as someone said earlier, it is mainly due to the poor economy. I am not an agency nurse, but the hospital I work for has decided not to take agency nurses at this time due to the budget. I loved our agency nurses. When all else failed, we always had an agency nurse to help out when we were short staffed. Now even the staff nurses are having shifts cancelled. I was cancelled one night just to be called in 2 hours later to come in and pick up the new admissions. I didn't understand why they would cancel me knowing we were going to picking up more patients, but I guess they have to go by the staffing grid. I hope things get better soon. I miss my agency nurses.

i do agency on the weekends I am off, and each time i tell them i am available for the whole weekend, i get no call. Its tough out there. I work PRN at a local hospital and I am hoping the census at our hospital stays the way it is because my husbands job is not working him either.
good luck !
