Cosmetic Nursing Job for New Grad - Advice Please

Hi everyone - after 9 months of looking for a job as a new grad, I just landed an excellent opportunity with a plastic surgeon. My job would be several different types of lasers, injections (botox and fillers), and OR circulation and some scrubbing and recovery. I can't pass it up in this economy and I think I would be a great fit for this position. I am wondering if it will really limit me down the road, I still don't really know what kind of nurse I want to be, I originally thought I wanted to work in L&D, but I don't know. I really would prefer the 3 day per week schedule that the hospital offers (and overtime pay), on the other hand this is no nights/weekends/holidays.

Do you think this job will limit my options down the road? Or is any experience good experience? It's not acute care, but I figure it will open me up to the world of surgery centers, fertility clinics, maybe even home health. Do you think I will ever have a chance of working in a hospital again? Don't know that I would want to, I just want to know that I have that option if I need it. Regardless I'm taking the job and I'm super excited!

Off the cuff I'd say get some GOOD of YOUR OWN. If it is the ONLY job then go for it, but I doubt it will further your career as much as you would like. Only my opinion.

the OR/scrubbing and PACU experience would serve you well. As far as L&D goes, if the labor unit does their own c/sections, then your OR experience would be helpful.

You may be able to get a job in the OR at a hospital after you get some experience, then you'll have a good chance of getting 12 hour shifts.

My two cents -- any experience is better than no experience.

Some nurses that have been practicing for awhile would kill for your job. It probably won't be a great place to learn a lot of new skills, but you'll get your feet wet and have a great schedule....and who knows? Maybe you'll be there for 20 years.

Sparkle, I feel very qualified to give you my perspective about the new job. Congratulations !!!! Let's cover the good points : this position can be a foundation to develop your skills and confidence. Working for a plastic surgeon is a fantastic opportunity - I started as a surgical tech working plastics and oral surgery, now a registered nurse with almost 20 years of operating room circulating experience.

Just keep your eyes open, check his credentials. Be safe, keep your patients safe - whether or not you have recovery room experience make sure you are never left alone with a post surgical patient. There are no shortcuts - no "simple procedures". I am not trying to scare you but when things go wrong in an ambulatory setting, they go wrong fast.

I am a new grad (May 2010) and I just started at a dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon last month. I am working with him on his regular skin cancer removal surgeries and then his cosmetic surgeries. We also do Botox, Juvederm, Zerona and many laser procedures.

I took it because its very hard to find a job in NJ but its not something that I want to do forever. I love that I don't have to work nights, weekends, or holidays but its just not the hospital setting I was looking for.

I was wondering the same thing... If I work hear for about a year and then I try and go into a hospital will I still get a preceptor and be considered a new grad?
