Hi all--

I am really interested in the medical aesthetics thing--botox, stuff like that. Anybody know where I can get trained? I live in Colorado, by the way.

THANKS :p

Hey BChapp,

I am working on my own aesthetics business, but I am planning on my overhead being low. I am concentrating on the injectables, Botox and Restylane and travelling to local high-end salons and performing these procedures in the salon. So far, I have 3 salons interested. I offer 10% of net and Botox and Restylane at cost to the owners. I will have to pay my Medical Director as well. We have not decided on an amount yet. My Medical Director is planning on getting laser in the future, but that is not something I am interested investing in.

I wanted to give my two cents here. I've been an aesthetic nurse since 2005, have my own med spa. I would have done better and made more money without all the stress by just being a regular floor nurse. I don't advise going into this field, it's an extremely expensive business to be in and if your paying a doctor, rent, equipment lease, ins, etc. you will soon find that there is nothing left over for you. Competition is fierce, laws constantly change, it's not a glorious high paying job as some may have you think.

Hi,

I live in Massachusetts and am trying to find a program for medical aesthetics. I was recently a model at a seminar for botox/filler training for nursed and docs. It seems like a great field to get into but I don't know how. I know there are w/e training seminars but from there how would I get more training and a job? Should I start with am estethic course at Elizabeth Grday. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks

Hello fellow aesthetic nurses!

I am considering my options for adding a skin care line in addition to the services I perform. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

1) Do you sell a skin care line? what line do you sell?

2) What types of skin care products do you sell? (fading cream, etc.?)

3) Do you sell the products for double the price you bought them?

I may go with IMAGE. I purchase the actual chemical peels from them. I Just hope their home skin care line works well also.

I had my own skin care line, private label, made at a lab with fantastic ingredients. Much stonger and better than anything you could find at a store, it actually worked. But, it didn't sell. I've found that people want brand name skin care like Obagi. The hype surrounding these brands leads the customer to think they must be good, even if a cheaper better option is available. Go with the name brands, your own private label or spa magazine items will not sell nearly as well.

WOw - this is a great conversation but I felt it left me with many exciting questions.

I'm near Las Vegas, NV and wondering how on earth I can go about searching for a school/establishment that will train me?

A thought on the dermal fillers - can an NP order these for you? In our state an NP does NOT have to work under the direction of an MD (I'm in Arizona) and can act as a GP. Wondering if that would work for some/many of you?

How do I go about finding out the laws/statutes for operating such a business in my state?

See? I'm the curious type!

I know of a nurse in Pueblo CO that trains in microdermabrasion, lamprobe, teeth whitening and other things if you would like her info you could mail me directly. She was also featured in the Nursing Spectrum last year.

I trained in Florida at the Esthetic Skin Institute. Web site is

www.esiw.com

Sasha Parker is the instructer, all classes are hands on, very good. It is made of all medical professionals only. Hope this info helps!

I have checked their program out, is it worth the money as compared to much cheaper programs out there. I am confused on being certified--one of the programs I checked into gave you certification with only taking one of the 8 classes??? Currently I am working and being trained under a Dr. but want to be recognized throughout USA since I do take travel assignments. Is there any real guidelines for RN's in aesthetics? It appears many RNs are practicing via different training avenues.

It seems that there are no easy ways for this new field..If you become a liscenced esthetician (I did) then you still have to retake the exam in each state(or most of them) to practice as such...I think it is easier using your job training and then look into becoming an NP of this field...I don't know...i am very frustrated myself as I have been trying to get a job with MD group for 6mo...Good Luck

please do not feel you have to become an esthetician. You are a regisitered nurse!!!! You can take seminars on topics that tyou wish to perform and work as a nurse that does esthetics. In most states it is within scope of practice. Practices like microdermabrasion, serious skin treatments, massage, teeth whitening, permanent makeup can be done under your liscence and without MD supervision. I suggest that you see which procedures you would like to do and take seminars a nd set yourself up in practice. It is super easy. Try renting space form a chiropractor they usally have extra room and for about 259 a month you have a nice busy place to practice. Beleive me I have places nurses in these types of siutations and have myself practiced like that. Take the leap of faith and do it. Do not over analysis it. Review your scope of pratice regs for your state. Got to go for now. Let me know what state your form and maybe I could help.

Thank you for the advice. I am in New Jersey..they are very strict and have made grumblings that these are not in RN scope of practice....several RN's have gone to review with the board for microdermabrasion without an MD oversight. I am also not sure I cam financially afford to "open" an office/ room and buy my own equipment, as in NJ you can't "rent" rm space...I am interested in going to another state possibley, but I haven't figured the best state to practice in yet..I am still a novice in this field and classes are skyrocketting in their fees. I learned too late that I may not have needed an Aesthetics liscence, but I felt in the long run it gave me more creditabilty as well as giving me the background I lacked. I wish I had spent my $ on those seminars instead. But i am still optomistic that I can utilize these two liscences in one practice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
