unsatisfied with ielts results

HI! I just received my test report form in ielts. Well, I'm not happy with the result, actually I feel so depressed. I got 6.5 in speaking test, but I need to have atleast 7 to qualify me to apply for a visa screen certificate in CGFNS/ICHP. The rest of my scores though are okay. This is my fourth time to take the test and I always get 6 or 6.5 in speaking test. I already enrolled in a review center and even speak to a native english speaker (american) regularly to improve my speaking skills but my scores did not improve. I don't know what else to do. I'm thinking maybe there are other english speaking countries out there beside U.S. which only require a minimum band score of 6.5 in speaking? Please help! I'm tired of retaking the test just to get atleast 7 spoken band.:bluecry1:

We share the same sentiments... Just like you I am tired also of taking ielts. It was my third time to take this exam. This is the last thing that CGFNS (Visa Screen) is asking me to submit.:bluecry1:

Sorry, but all of the countries that have the English exam requirements have the same for the speaking at the very least.

How much time are you practicing in English? Is it 100% of the time, or only when you are in class?

I recommend Scott's English out of Australia, they do the best job as far as I am concerned and you can do their review on-line and for quite reasonable fee as long as you have computer/internet access.

Their website is www.scottsenglish.com and would suggest checking them out. Also American movies are quite good to use and listen to as well to see how they are using the language as well as pronunciation.

Best of luck to you.

Actually I resigned from my work so I can devote my time solely in studying ielts. Right now I plan to go back to work and practice my english at the same time. My mother keeps on telling me that I have already wasted a lot of my time. Partly I know where my deficiency is. I'm not a very greagarious person. I do not talk as much and have the tendency to be timid at times. As soon as I can overcome this maybe my score will improve. Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it!

May I ask if you took the nclex and passed it. I already passed the nclex and now I'm worried that it will expire very soon if I won't be able to get my social security number (SSS) in the US. I only have 1.5 years left before it will expire.

I just want to share my experience. Though I took TOEFL-iBT. Watching movies a tad too many was, I think, the reason why I passed it.

My question to you is, is it possible for you to take TOEFL-iBT instead of IELTS? It might help you, because in TOEFL, you don't need to have a face to face speaking session, instead the computer will record all your responses in the speaking section. Maybe you feel conscious while speaking in English publicly. Just a thought.

Don't give up! You can do it. :heartbeat

Please take the time to do some reading about what you will need to do to keep your NCLEX results, much has already been written on this topic here about licensure in CA.

Woudl not do a thing until you have 6 to 8 months left and then you will need to apply thru another state for licensure and have the passing results submitted there. There is no way that you are going to be thru the immigration process and ready to begin work in the next 18 months, that is what is needed for you to obtain the SSN#.

That's a good advice. I think CGFNS recognized TOEFL-iBT as one of the language proficiency exams that they require. Though, I don't think I want to review again for a different type of exam. I'm already familiar with ielts. I just wish I took TOEFL-iBT the first time instead of ielts. But I will give it a thought. Thanks for the encouragement!

I think that is a good suggestion... What is the difference between IELTS and TOEFL-ibt? Which is harder? They say that taking IELTS is cheaper than TOEFL. Where can I get information regarding TOEFL-iBT? Thanks to all those who will reply.

We actually see people do better on the speaking sections when they have a human in front of them as their tester and not speaking into a machine. Scores also tend to be higher this way.

One needs to feel quite comfortable with their English skills face to face as they are going to be dealing with their patients as well as other staff. And this will also hinder someone in even getting a job if their skills are not excellent.

Now I'm really confused. I was just thinking a while ago that maybe I'll try my luck with TOEFL-ibt. But if what you say about speakers performing better in a face to face conversation than speaking into a machine is true plus TOEFL-ibt being more expensive than ielts, I'm now having second thoughts about taking TOEFL.

Can anyone give me an overview of TOEFL-ibt? Just to give me an idea. Thanks.
