Recent RN or CPN in Montreal, Quebec

Hi, Everyone!

Some questions for those who recently became an RN or a CPN in Montreal, Quebec.

1) OIIQ now states on their website that regardless of one's studies and work experience, all applicants outside of Quebec must complete at least 30 days of clinical integration training. From your personal experience, is it true? Also, did you feel that with your level of nursing education (Bachelor of Science or "Etudes universitaires de premier cycle completees, Sciences infirmieres" in my case) and your work experience (3 years in Russia, 1 year in USA in my case) you were required to complete more than the bare 30-day minimum training? I, of course, bombarded OIIQ with these questions over the phone, but they're playing deaf and dumb, as usual, and just keep reciting their "formulaires", which I can freely read on their website, without the luxury of the lengthy international phone call!

Basically, what I'd like to know is how long would it take me from the time my application is approved by the OIIQ to the time I complete integration training and become a CPN? I've done some preliminary job interviews, and this is the first question they ask. Again, I have a Bachelor degree in Nursing and 4 years work experience.

2) Do I even need to mention my work experience to the OIIQ? From the recounts I've read, it seems that OIIQ doesn't really look at your work experience and you still have to pass that 30-day integration. But the question is, if I don't submit my work experience for OIIQ's evaluation, is there a risk that even with a Bachelor degree in Nursing I will be required to complete more than those 30 days in a clinical setting? Is there a chance OIIQ will drop some theory training req's on me as well?

Oh, and the reason I don't want to mention my work experience to OIIQ is because it's gonna be very expensive for me. While there's no problem with the American hospital I work at, my former Russian employers are gonna have a field day milking me for money for every piece of documentation they'll be required to fill out, translate and send by international mail. I've already gone through this when I received my US license - paid a hefty sum to each Russian employer just so the OIIQ's applications won't end up in the trash can. They call it "processing expenses", I call it "racketeering". So, does your work experience make any difference in the amount of integration training OIIQ requires you to do?

3) At what point during the application/integration/registration process will you need to have a Canadian work permit? Is it before you can begin you integration training? Or is it after you complete training and can become a CPN? If I understood correctly, one is not paid during the integration training, right? So, is it still considered work for which you need to obtain a work permit? Or can I, as a US citizen, just move to Montreal for the 30-day training period and worry about getting a work permit only after I'm eligible to become a CPN?

4) Was it easy to find work as a CPN? Or, if that were the case, as a trainee? Please, share your experiences and suggestions.

Big thanks to everyone!

Hi Mia,

I have the eimpression that you did very well in the exam. I am sure you passed. So congratulations in advance.

hi jopin.. i'm in surgery now, struggling. :uhoh3: the ratio on a good day would be 1 nurse to 4-5 patients. it doesn't sound much, but it's a lot of work for a novice like me. i have not worked anywhere else so i have nothing to compare my experience here with. yes, try all the other hospitals. you can see a listing here:

http://highwayhome.com/medical/hospitals_by_city/quebec/hospitalsquebec.html

goodluck!

:lol2:hi again jopin. thanks for your positive vibes. im not saying im sure to pass the exam tho, because i dnt know if i did well at all until i see the results. but pass or fail, im just saying it's not impossible for anyone having to take the oiiq test. i have two more tries after this first try. i'm posting for anyone else who's clueless about it, as i was. the quebec licensure exam was a big mystery, and prior to taking the exam, i searched the internet for any testimony about it, but found almost none!

update us about your jobsearch ok!

Hi Mia, thanks again and again for your wealth of information. Same in BC, 5 patients during the day and 7 patients during the night shift, for sure, the workload keeps you on your feet through out the shift, but nursing is such a very rewarding profession, aren`t we all so blessed to be in this profession. I am sure you are doing just well. I really do admire your courage, determination and perseverance, from the time you applied to where you are now, kudos to you girl! and you sharing information, thanks a lot really. Have a wonderful day.

Hi Mia, i am just now doing job search online and i have the opportunity to check postings in this site; for sure i will keep you posted with my jobsearch. My classmates and I met up right after the exam to discuss about it and there was a consesus amongsts all of us, we had no idea how we did in the exam, yes, you do prepare for it and our instructors adapted the same type of open ended question in our exams during our four years in nursing school but we still found that the exam was more on the application of practice, so i think i relate to how you feel, and like my classmates and I, we were uncertain how we did in the exam, but when we got the result, all of us passed. So I am sure you did well.

Hi Ms. Mia,

I found your post very helpful...I am currently working on my packet to be sent to the OIIQ....I've been living here in Montreal for over a year now and I should have sent my application way back...I regret that I focused on my Ontario application vs my Quebec application (knowing what I know now oh boy CNO is slow)....I graduated from nursing school 2009 with an RN-Diploma. I am Registered in Ohio and I have zero experience...Ms. Mia what work did you do when you got here? I am really in need of a job and I am so bored out of my mind right now...Hope you continue posting...by the way I am also a Pilipino.

Hi RNplaya. I was a sitter/caregiver/PAB for two homecare agencies in montreal. I did this until I got my papers from OIIQ. It's not a bad job, you get to practice your nursing skills in a way. I told the agency I prefer working as a sitter for patients confined in hospitals, so it sort of gave me a little peek on what goes on inside. :D

i'm pretty sure you'd be qualified with your nursing degree. I don't know if I'm allowed to post the websites here but when I first came to the country, I applied online and sent them my resume. They call back almost immediately. Just do a google search for nursing agencies in montreal, and will sure to lead you to the agencies. Or you can send me a private message so I can give you the name of my agencies. I had a good time working with them, and coming straight from Pinas myself, I was able to practice my english.:yeah:

You can also try looking for private clients, but it's not as secure as having an agency. You can have both agency-clients and private. Bottomline is, it was a great learning experience for me. and it could be for you too. Best of luck!

Ate Mia I'm fairly new to this website and I don't know how to send a pm yet. Is it okay if I call you Ate? I am 26 yrs old. Let me know if I'm older than you hehe...I found some agencies. I sent them my resume hopefully I'll get a call. Thank you so much! You are really helpful...Good luck!

but I did google it and found some agencies

Hi Jopin and all nurses,I sent an email to the nursing order of Quebec, they told me no problem if I don't have a file number but in case I have they will accelerate my immigration process.
