Omnibus Online-BNE

I am taking classes at Omnibus International College foundation. They are a private school in the Philippines, but have a site in Houston, TX where students can take their clinicals. I know they are not accredited in USA, but they are in the Philippines. In the Philippines they have Practical Nursing (PN), but Omnibus titles it ADN (Associates Degree Nursing) equivalent.

My question is: Is there any way I can verify if my degree from Omnibus will be honored in TX by the BNE (Board of Nurses Examiners) for licensing as a Foreign graduate student? How do I go about making sure that their program is equivalent and acceptable to the Texas licensing board when I apply as a foreign graduate and get an Registered Nursing license, NOT a Licensed Practical Nursing?

You are probably right. I plan to disenroll in the Clinical portion tomorrow morning and hopefully will get my money back for that clinical class. I have not received notice from the BON yet, as it is probably too early to receive a response. So I am not going to take the chance anymore and waste my parents money.

Your responses about the BON not accrediting me because of the simulatenous completion of the clincial and lecture part makes sense, as it is not accredited in the Philippines. I am sad to say this, but you are probably correct. I should have researched Omnibus sooner. And their website is even down (www.omnibusonline.org) so I guess their school is erroneous and illegitimate. Thanks for everything, I just wish I knew sooner.

Best of luck to you. Sorry that you did not know about this site sooner. We would have saved you many headaches.

Check out the LPN thread at the top of the Philippine Forum for much information about these programs. Much of what is posted would apply to this type of program as well.

I would file a complaint with the US Embassy in Manila about this program as well, and perhaps even the Texas Attorney General about the clinical part of the program that is being done in Texas since it is not accepted nor accredited to be doing what they are. The clinical part of your program needs to be done thru an approved School of Nursing and doubt that this is the case with this program. Just being a hospital and having students rotate thru would not give you the required hours for licensure in the US as well.

Just for reference

If you plan on being a PN, you can't go wrong with an approved school.

This program is for the ADN and is not approved by CHED in the Philippines nor is it accepted for licensure in the Philippines. And clinicals need to be done at the same time as the theory part of the course.

This entire program needs to be reported for what is is trying to do.

I went to Omnibus, their location in Houston, TX. They let me get a refund, but said my credit card will be refunded within a week or two. I am just glad to get back my money, since I have not started clinicals yet, which I was going to do.

I have a letter received a long time ago about that media story in Houston on KHOU. If any of you are interested in reading it, I will attach it (or try to). Omnibus stated they are accredited in the Philippines by CHED and have Two nurses currently working in TX approved and passed by BON. Just thought it would be interesting to know.

I can not figure out how to add the explanation letter from Omnibus in an attachment in pdf format. Can anyone help me?

CHED does not give accreditation to any two year ADN program in the Philippines as a start, so that is just a bunch of BS that they are giving to you. Only the four year BSN programs are under CHED.

I still do not trust one thing that they are stating since the two year program is not even recognized by the Philippine government for licensure as well.

They can state whatever they wish, but the fact remains that the programs is not a CHED approved program. Wonder what they will do to try and prove that? If they are approved over there as they claim, why are they not approved over here? Something is always fishy when you see things like this.

We ask that you do not post anything that you received from them about their program, there is no way to attach it here in most cases.

Glad to hear that you are able to get your money back from them. But not sure why it is going to take that long for you to get a refund, something else is fishy with that as well.

This is my first time posting on this website. I have always been a fan of this website because I learn a lot from here.

I would just like to share my own personal experience with Omnibus.

Im a student of Omnibus since July 2007. Im not related in anyway with the owner (some of my classmates thought so because I belong to the same race as the owner). Im here to share my personal experience with them and what i know about that school. I used to be a certified teacher in Science, after 1 month of fulltime teaching, left and pursued Nursing, I had a BS Bio degree from Phils so I thought of going back to medical field. I went to HCC for 3 semesters and had difficulty with commute, parking fee, daycare for my kids and all. I left even though I had a 4 GPA. I love my Dean's List certificates posted on my wall. It motivates me when I'm down.

So, I enrolled in Omnibus, ADN degree. Its very convenient and less costly. I have made some research before I made my payment. They promised I can avail of their student loan thru their financial aid after they have made the initial assessment. So I paid the application fee. First flag! It didn't happen. They said they were not granted any financial aid. So, i started the online course, the theories. I was very frustrated. They have no qualified teacher to answer my questions, they have only 1 teacher in Houston. Their test questions are different from HCC. It does not stimulate critical thinking. I should know, I used to be a teacher myself and Im aware of TEKS, TAKS, etc. Most of the questions are identification. Even the books they endorse are different. So, I went back to HCC and bought Nursing books, looked at their learning web for the course syllabus and made my own summary, reading their assignments, anything that the instructor post. I did my own self study. It was tough, it was like being enrolled in 2 schools..... Then, they had the evolve website, it made my classes a little bit quicker because errors are fewer. They only pull questions from the websites test bank. Then, I had my first clinical at Spanish Meadows. There were only 2 ADN students, me and the other, and the rest were LVN. I find it weird but I attended it. The clinical instructor was very skilled RN but not quite great with her communication skills. It has been 4 months after our first clinical and we never had the second one yet. Then, the owner encouraged us to go to Phils. to continue our clinicals. Some went but I remained here. I can't because I have kids. So I decided to switch to LVN. Up to now, we are waiting for the next clinical which is going to be virtual from what I heard. Now, they are promising that we are going to graduate come December. We'll see if it's going to happen.

sighhhhhhh!!!! You maybe asking why did i not leave when I can already sense that someting is iffy about everything they do...wish i can, but sometimes you have to balance your family's obligation and finances.. with Omnibus, i can work fulltime.... i can't go back to community college because of their clinical schedule and i don't have enough resources..i do not want to take another laon.. if at the end, the paper im going to receive from Omnibus is worthless, i will just go home to Phils and earn my second degree ... ... second, i have met the 3 students who took the NCLEX LVN and passed... actually the were kicked out from one community college before their graduation and Omnibus just processed their papers and took credit for it... One community college should stop kicking their students before graduation because students panic and enroll immediately at Omnibus... with Omnibus you can transfer all the subjects you have taken from other schools..... Omnibus have 2 schools in phils; 1 in the province that has been there for 20 years (elem to college, they have BS Nursing), 2nd in the city (quite recent for Vocational Nursing course). Just an FYI, Omnibus has a sister company named, Olra Foundation which is a non-profit organization. Now, the big question, how can they operate and have CHED accreditation, them having 2 schools, go figure...

I will surely let you know if I will be able to graduate this December and sit on the NCLEX LVN Feb. 2009.

That seemes impossible since they are not an accredited school. I hate to say this you get what you pay for. Why not enroll in an accredited school?

Yeah I agree... it seems impossible.... but I have met the 3 LVNs myself who walked away with a license... they even work for them now... they happen to have another sister company, a home health... im giving it only till the end of this year... i have completed my theories, i will just have to finish few of my remaining clinicals.... you can't blame also some of the students who go there... they would just like to improve their lives and some community college are just being so difficult....

I got what i paid for?... yup, i think so too... :typing

Thanks so much for your information. I'm glad to have posted on here and are getting really good responses. I have not withdrawn from the lecture portion, as I am unsure if they will give me a refund/W or to just finish those 3 classes I enrolled in online til January.

I am clueless as what to do in the future regarding my career. I will most likely switch majors/ careers in the health field. Probably try Respiratory Therapy or something... Thanks for your experience.

Why not enroll in accredited school?... 3 semesters with Houston Community College... oh my!!... it is costly... the parking fee, toll fee, daycare fee, gas, tuition fee and books are okay i take out student loan but interest are quite high at 6.28%... sad to say, i did not qualify for financial aid.... i sleep most of the time at 2 am reading and doing my homework-- it compromises my relationship with my husband who happens to have a job that sends him on and off shore for weeks.. so when he's here, he wants full attention that i sometimes can't provide when Im' studying.... we moved to another city, i inquired in a few community college close to the area, they would like me to retake all the refresher Science subjects from their school and I can't transfer most of the subjects i have take from HCC... so, it is like starting from scratch.... oh well... so Im with Omnibus... but we'll see what's gonna happen next
