There is a difference I believe. :nurse:

When you first graduate as an RN it is expected that some nurses work in different specialties until they find the one they love and want to base their whole career in and will maybe change between 3 or more, BUT I have worked in Critical Care for 11 yrs and have my Masters in it also. I am also considering doing a PhD in it also so it shows I have no intention of ever leaving it.

G'day,

Another Aussie here following the same path......

Before you waste any funds on "make up" courses - Paeds and Maternity - I suggest you get your educational background assess by CGFNS.

Given your background/experience, the BON may over-ride the Paeds and Maternity requirement. A mate of mine (with 10 years in ICU) was granted permssion to sit the NCLEX exam this year despite not having ever completed Paeds and Maternity or any post-grads studies; his 10 year experience was the strength of his application.

Furthermore, Paeds and Maternity are often fashioned into various nursing units. As such, it may only be clinical hours for which you need to "make up".

Best of Luck

I think the thing to remember here is a cultural difference.

In the States midwifery is considered a health condition and therefore all nurses are educated to be with woman.

In Australia and in the UK it is not considered a medical condition as such, woman is not unwell and therefore midwives are educated to educate and care for the woman and baby.

Therefore our degrees do not include midwifery and usually paediatrics as this is considered a specialty to do after you qualify.

We tend to have more mental health in our degrees and med/surg and are allowed to specialise in 3rd year, which is most unfortunate when you want to be assessed overseas.

True true true Ceridwyn...

Joeldew, I am hoping that is right that they can pass me with my experience only. What is your specialty, where and when are you looking at leaving? I'm in Melbn. :D

Hey,

I have a Masters in Nursing and currently working in Emergency (Sydney).

I'm going to send my application to CGFNS this week before I enrol in any more units.

I spent over $3000 on a Paeds course (inter-state) only to find that my uni has NO interest in organising my clinical placements. In fact, they haven't even bothered establishing working relationships with the hospitals. Please don't repeat my mistake and get your educational background assessed by CGFNS before you enrol in any more units.

I'm looking at Florida, Texas or North Carolina. At this stage, it will probably be some time next year. Fortunately, I'm not in a hurry because I have other obligations but I do want to get the ball rolling now.

Best of Luck

I hope Australian experience is considered of value and be no need to study areas of no interest. I doubt anyone/or you would apply/ employ somebody with no experience/nor interest in mid anyway when you have so much to offer in another specialty.

Though the bottom line is: your initial degree may be seen as lacking maternity or paeds if you did not elect to do it in 3rd year and have not done any in a post grad.

'Joeldew' think I know the university you have studied!

Good luck cobbers!!!

Hiya,

Wow that isn't good! Please tell me it isn't La trobe as that is who I contacted about possibly doing the mid subjects? I would be following that up with the Ombudsman if I was you, as well as the local gov.

I didn't enrol in the subjects, I just contacted the Dean and asked if I would be able to sit the third mid subject as well even though (neonates) the other two subjects on basic pregnancy and mid are prerequisites.

I posted my academic transcript requests off to both universities, as well as my registration request off to the AHPRA today. The first uni I spoke to said that they had received the same confusing and complex requests by a nurse looking to move to the UK.

Are you sending your CGFNS request off by the online application method?

I am wondering who is going to ask me for my CV to check my work history also.

I think it's a good idea to get the ball rolling now just in case something hits the fan and I don't want to be stuck here any longer than I have to be. I'd leave tomorrow if my husband would let me lol

Perhaps then I might be lucky because I asked for Intensive Care!

No, it is not La Trobe but within the same state.

I contacted a local university today who teaches Paeds and Maternity as a singular unit and was granted permission to study it as a "non-award" unit. This will save me considerable amount of time as I really don't have that much free time to study them as respective units (particularly when I have almost no interest in them). I think I will take up this offer next semester.

Why don't we continue this conversation off-line and I'll keep you updated with my application? email - [email protected]

Take care
