New Grad Canadian Nurse potential job opportunity in California

Hi!

I'm currently a new graduate Canadian nurse that has a potential job offering in California, working at a nursing home. Thanks to my relative who currently works there and deals with the hiring process.

I currently am in the process of applying and writing my Minnesota NCLEX. I chose Minnesota because I understand it's underneath the NCLStates and that it overall opens more job opps for me.

So lets say, I pass my NCLEX and that job opportunity is available for me in California.

What are the specific steps for me to obtain my California license? I understand I would need to be endorsed by California.

What else must one require?

Would anyone know how long this process would take until I can start working in California?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for your time!

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

The NCL is only relevant if you are a legal permanent resident of the compact state. Since you are not a MN resident you will get a license only valid in MN. If you have no intention of living or working in MN you are just wasting time and money.

CA requires a valid social security number to apply for a license by exam or endorsement. You have to meet the same requirements as an internationally educated nurse whether you apply by exam or endorsement. The current application assessment for IENs is 3-6 months.

How do you plan to get a US work permit/visa and SSN?

I think there is a shorter wait for green cards if you are a Canadian, but I don't believe there is a demand for nurses in California. They produce enough of their own.

So, it sounds like nepotism at it's best.

Depends which category you are getting GC.
