They have revised the US unemployment numbers, it is much higher than first thought.

Before you post, that there are still jobs and you hope retrogression is over. Please think.

These are my neighbors who don't have a job and may loss their homes.

That hospitals are hurting and nurses are also loosing their jobs.

The the US economy has changed and nurses are looking for more work ( second jobs) and nurses are returning back to the bedside.

The trend of importing nurses has stopped and their are no economic incentives for bringing in new nurses ( hospitals could get tax write offs this has stopped).

It is Christmas time, this is only November's number, my guess is December's will be higher. There are families attached to these numbers. How would you feel if over 1.2 million people is your country one month lost their source of income? At and probably to news will be worse!

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the doors are already open to all. People from Ireland, England, and other countries with a decent standard of living aren't necessarily all wanting to move to the US. It's mainly people from poor, third world countries who are trying to squeeze too many people through the door all at once. In terms of recruiting, though, you are right. Most foreign nurses are recruited from poor, third world countries that mass- produce nurses for export.

I think I have only worked with one Irish nurse in my entire nursing career. She was a sweet person and a good nurse. I could tell she really loved nursing, and wasn't just in it for the money. I'd like to work with nurses from a lot of different countries, but I don't think that's going to happen.

Residents of the UK need apply for a Green Card. Our own SliverDragon could not get a visa to the US. People immigrate for other reasons then money.

The nurses I have worked from the UK seem to bring a high standard of nursing to the bedside and in my experience are very patient focused.

Depends on the nurse, the experience they have, and the employer. UK residents are not barred from applying for work visas, provided they meet the criteria. I believe SilverDragon got caught in immigrant visa retrogression.

Yes I got caught up with retrogression and before that my first employer backed out just after approval resulting in having to start all over again finding a employer etc, initially started the process in 2003. Now in Canada and loving it. There are people from all over the world that want to move to the US and all for their own reasons for some it is better quality of lie, better finances (well hopefully) and for others try something different (that was me, spent over 15 years in the UK nursing and wanted to experience something different

Silverdragon sounds like Canada is lovely. Funny how things can work out for the best. Are you planning on working as a nurse in Canada?

Gilbert, I think what you are saying is that if you have special qualifications you can bypass retrogression? Also are you saying the CGFNS says your training is equal to a diploma while a university acknowledges your master's degree. That is crazy.

Am planning on nursing here but waiting for the nursing college to get things sorted is taking ages, reminds me must ring them to see what is happening :)

I live in the Dallas / Ft. Worth area.

The recession has not hit this area very hard.

Houses have not lost any value. But the economy will rebound and all will be good in time..

We rode a wave of good times in the economy for the last 28 years, about time Reagan came into office. The economy always rebounds.

i don't know about the economy rebounding anytime soon but i do know in the northeast, we've been hit. The housing market is down and if i had money i'd be in the real estate business of buying houses and selling them when the market rebounds. People would rather walk away from a home that's losing it's value than pay an excessive mortgage on it. Don't blame them. My parents had to sell their house because the rates shot up. Something has to be done about predatory lending so we don't see this again.

Yes, things are bad, even Dallas is bracing for a bad year.

Things are better then most but city officials are using the word Bleak.

Well, not "bypass retrogression" per se, because getting a work visa is not the equivalent of getting a green card/immigrant visa. It is faster, and sometimes cheaper and more convenient, but then you are faced with being a temporary resident rather than permanent (with all the associated issues and challenges that brings, not the least of which is having to leave immediately if you lose your job). But yes, experienced specialty nurses can get specialty work visas.

Almost accurate re CGFNS. They just basically said the grad. dip. meant nothing as they don't have an equivalent. In actuality, it constitutes all the coursework of a masters degree (minus the thesis component). I am now doing an MSN in the US, and (after a long process of providing all the subject info, assessments, syllabus etc) was given credit for the hours I'd completed in that degree... it is slightly nuts!

hi there, would you be kind enough to share the name of your agency or hospital that hire nurses under H1C visa. Any input is greatly appreciated.

There are only 14 hospitals that go the H1c route and you can google for them. Also just because they do them doesn't mean they are currently have job vacancies especially with the current US job situation. Only 500 are issued in the year. Agencies are not allowed to use H1c
