Licensure requirements for CA for foreign grad

World Immigration

Published

I just graduated from a nursing school in the phils. I wasn't able to take the local board bec. my immigrant visa was about to expire.I was lucky that i was able to finish my course there. My question is do you really have to be a local board passer so you will be eligible to take the CA NCLEX here?I mean even as an immigrant? And for all those foreign grads how long did it take for your application for licensure to be processed?:uhoh3: just wondering....

i know what you mean and thank you so much for all these information, my relatives are doing what they can in the states. i am aware of the years that will pass by, thats why im making sure of every move i make. thanks again.

i am not by the way trying to apply in any other state. i havent even received my eligibility yet. let's take these steps one at a time.

I still think you are not seeing what we are trying to explain and save you some money.

You are apply to Ca for initial licensure, it will take you approx 4 weeks to get the result and no license, if you do not provide a SSN within 3 years your file is deleted and if you haven't moved your NCLEX results you will loose that and may have to resit the exam. Looking at moving your NCLEX result to another BON will probably mean CES from CGFNS so will have to go through all the process again on getting your transcripts sent and CES usually takes 4 months if all paperwork is received in a reasonable manner. This will all cost money.

It is all your choice but we are just making sure you are aware of all the choices and pitfalls in front of you

I perfectly understand what you all mean. I read all the threads here specifically suggesting Vermont or New Mexico BON. But i already sent my application, with the specifications of my relatives there. Thank you so much for helping us, and clearing things out. But please also understand our side, Filipino nurses have a lot to consider. Specially the ones who make the decisions for them. I know Ca is not a good decision but its already been done for me. I just have to wait. We all just want to help our families in the future. Please don't bring us anymore down. Again I'm just trying to do this one step at a time.

Sorry but I am not trying to bring anyone down, just save some money and time.

hello

supermoderators thanks for your concern, i got your point, anyways

if ever i wait for cali brn's letter of eligibility, would anyone know how long is the duration of the said eligibility? do i have to register to pearson vue and take the nclex rn exam within a year?

thanks

CA's eligibility is valid up to 2 years ...

I am a foreign grad of the Philippines but I already have a SSN from when I went to school in the United States many years ago....

I was thinking of applying for licensure and taking the nclex exam in California...Is it still a bad idea for me to apply for it there since I do already have a SSN?

Thanks in advance.

It is not a bad idea, but be aware that you are still looking at about a five year wait for a chance at a green card to work in the US, and no guarantee that you will get one. There are many more applicants than there are limited number of visas.

It is still going to take months to get an approval from them to sit for the exam since you graduated out of the US. Also be aware that it has been increasingly difficult for those from your country to get petitioned in CA for the green card, and you need that to be able to work here.

Now i'm confused...

can one realy have an SSN and not be a greencard holder?

You can have a SSN without GC but you need to meet requirements (some other visa) and if you read the posters comment they as at school there many years ago. Usually if you have a SSN but can't work it will say on it something along the lines of not able to work. SSN is yours for life so if you leave the US it still is yours. It may also be that years ago it was easier to get a SSN but the US changed things to try and cut back on illegal immigrants working as many things require SSN

Thank you for your quick response.... California and Vermont were my 2 choices of states to apply for licensure to. I will probably go the Vermont route. And during the long wait until all the steps for licensure and employment in the US I'll try to get some good solid work experience here in the Philippines.... Thanks again for your insight!

Any update on the CA BON requirement of a local license? Haven't heard any as of this time, their site isn't updated as well.. Any feedback pls...

We have not heard anything as of yet, but the big deal is that if you do not have the local license and it is a five year wait for a chance at a visa, how is one to get experience without having that license? Most other countries require the local license to be able to work there. And add into the equation that you will be competing against a large number that wish to get the green card as well, and they are going to have significant experience, so you can expect immigration to pay close attention to that when granting a visa. They are going to be slow to give one to someone that has not worked in the field for five years plus.

Your choice as to what to do, but I would go for the NLE to get experience to be able to work someplace.
