Work as an RN before becoming a NP?Register Today!
- by softballsmarty May 16, '11I'm a nursing student in college, and am working toward my BSN, but am really considering being an NP. Should I work as an RN before going back to school? Or just stick out the extra schooling right after undergrad? Let me hear your opinions and experiences! Thanks!

Plus, though there are those that disagree with me, I think nursing experience can only help you with assessment, time management and just knowing which direction you want to go.

I was in the same position as you very recently! I decided to go to grad school (DNP) the very next semester part time.. so I will be working/getting experience while learning. My program will take about 4 1/2 years but I feel like I will have enough experience at the end since I would be working full time the whole time anyway. Also, I don't have enough money to just not work and go to school full time. As far as not knowing your specialty, my school only offers Adult/Gerontology and family.. so all I really had to know is if I wanted to include kids in my study or not. Good luck and keep us updated!
