MY name is Bernie I have been an RN for 17 years now. I am fast approaching my BSN graduation date of March 2015 :D . I am contemplating about the best graduate level degree to major in. I am leaning toward FNP, and here are the reasons why: I love the variety of seeing patients of all ages. I want to help make a difference even if small in the lives of people. I enjoy preventive holistic care. I love education students and even more patient education. I am concerned about my lack of med-surg experience and whether or not Ill be prepared for the rigorous curriculum. My experience is Med-surg telementry (6 months). Postpartum/nursery 16 + yrs. I have also done prn psych nursing on an adolescent and adult unit (which I loved)- Lastly I have 6 months of level 2 nicu along with postpartum home health for 2 years.

Any Advice would be appreciated. Thank You

Go for what you want! Your limited med-surg experience will not be an issue because think about it there are many Students out there who become NPs via direct entry programs, so many have no nursing experience at all before becoming NPs. Good luck!

It all depends on if you want to do what good for you or the patient? If for you, listen to Sha-Sha advice "Go for what you want" and "many Students out there who become NP's via direct entry programs, many have no nursing experience at all." To me that's sad and such a disservice to the people your trying to help. The other way get critical care experience and I think transferring to an ICU department while your a student will teach you the necessary skills to be a great nurse practitioner.
