CEU/CME for recertification with ANCC??

  1. Hello all,

I'm a little bewildered on how/what/when/which CEU/CME's count and where to get them for recertification with ANCC. I'm currently an FNP with board certification through ANCC, and it appears there are much cheaper, more plentiful sources of CEU/CME that apply to AANP recertification. Example is hours spent on UpToDate, is tracked by the program, but they only seem to apply toward AANP, not ANCC. And my current employer (VHA), doesn't provide CME money, that I can see anyway.

What recommendations of where to find ANCC certified CME credits? Sorry if this is a silly question, but I've read through the ANCC website and it is a little confusing to me.

Thanks for any input or recommendations or explanations on how the CME/CEU process works and where to get the required credits. I believe it's 75 hours, with 25 of those hours in Pharmacology within the 5 year recertification window.

    Thanks

AANP hours are accepted by ANCC. Below from the ANCC website-
Q: How do I know which contact hours are accredited/approved?
A: Formally approved continuing education must meet the following criteria:
Continuing nursing education (CNE) approved for nursing contact hours by an accredited provider or approver of nursing continuing education
Continuing medical education (CME) approved for CME hours
Sponsored by organizations, agencies, or educational institutions accredited or approved by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), or the Commission on Dietetic Registration
Provided by one of these accepted agencies:
    American Nurses Association (ANA)
American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)
American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)
American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA)
American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM)
    American Psychiatric Association (APA)
    American Psychological Association (APA)
    American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA)
    Emergency Nurses Association (ENA)
National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH)
National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates and Practitioners (NAPNAP)

It's 75 hours, including 25 hours in pharmacology, assuming you also meet one of the other requirements (like practice hours). If ONLY recertifying with CEs, you need 150n hours, including 25 hours of pharm.

UpToDate is OK with ANCC for non-pharm hours. Medscape has a lot of free CE hours, and they break the CE certificates down into pharm/non-pharm.

I am a member of AANP, and my membership fee is well worth the money, as I do most of my CEs online through the AANP website. That includes my 25 pharm hours. ANCC will accept AANP CEs, both pharm and non-pharm. AMA credits are pretty easy to find (Medscape and other places), but you can't use AMA credits for pharm unless the CE certificate specifically says the number of pharm hours that AANP or ANCC will accept.

So forgive me for my continued confusion, but as far as Uptodate goes, I just pulled this off of their FAQ on CME credits. Am I missing something??

However, UpToDate is not accredited by American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or any other state or federal nursing authority.

"Use of UpToDate is acceptable to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for renewal requirements. In addition, the ANCC has indicated that use of UpToDate meets the pharmacology requirement for nurse practitioners. However, it is up to the individual user to ensure that the content meets their needs and fits the requirements for this category. Please contact the ANCC for more information."

You might already know this --

But make sure to keep up with how many CME hours your state requires for licensure renewal. In some cases, that requirement will exceed the requirement for recertification. I live in NC and I am required to have 50 CME hours PER YEAR to renew my license... so the AANP requirements that I need to meet for recertification are just a drop in the bucket.

Those 25 pharm hours are by far the hardest to find. I use Western CME for those. Very reasonable compared to others. I just re certified with ANCC, and the hours were good to go.

They have a 25 hour psych pharm bundle offer for about 90 dollars.
