- 0Sep 5, '13 by lightoutI work assessed living night shift (I have the times) and I read through all the polices and training material a least twice a year. Our procedures and policies book is in the 3 rd floor nursing station bookshelf with most of the other training books.
Our procedures and policies book is not in a a good order and dose not have a good way to look something up. I have used the book to get me out of a few tinny issues over the years when our unit manager has never heard of some of the policies I have shown her from the book.
I feel that the procedures and policies book is just like the MSDS. Not many people know how or where to find them.
- 0Sep 6, '13 by tyvinEverytime I need to know something. It's like anything else, If you try to read the whole thing at once, forget it. Take it as it comes. I would look up admits, discharges, family issues and rights with POA, living wills, etc... codes, visitation, leave, signing out and in (very important). What and who can bring what to who and when. This goes for all facilities unless it's just obvious.

Mine is 600+ pages, the paper version hasn't been updated in probably several years but it is available on the company website if anybody ever has the time or the inclination to wade through it to find what you need.

I work at a place like that...small facility, started expanding, we realized we all had different nursing styles when it came to procedures, because a percentage was using procedures like their previous place of employment.
The administrator ended up making committees, and the three of us us ended up making a policy and procedures manual...two RNs and me, a LPN at the time. Helped run the place more smoothly.
- 4Sep 13, '13 by Whisperathe lack of procedures didn't work at all! I ended up buying a "how to do nursely things" book and gave it to the facility, where it was kept where the boss didn't know about it! isn't it ridiculous that such a thing was necessary?
