Emptying a foley catheter isn't so hard is it? Do you have any stories that you would like to share?

I think this cartoon is hilarious! Very cute. I have felt like this before, emptying a super-full Foley.

Hm. A Bard bag with a urometer will hold 4800 cc of urine. Granted, it will be completely round and the urometer will be sticking out and pointing up, but it will hold. Will the hanger-do thing stay on? No. I know this because I helped empty a coworker's patient's bag and was quite impressed. Also not fun is when they call a code while you're emptying, resulting in wet shoes, your head being bonked on the bed, and having to come back a half hour later to mop up the mess on the floor and finish emptying the foley.

Also in the epic category: a 3 way foley to irrigation that just won't run clear, no matter how much you dump in there. It drives the tech crazy to hear "do NOT touch my foley tonight, I don't care what you see. I can't keep up with it if you do." Then trying to convince the day shift that the I's and O's total greater than thirty LITERS is wonderful. They keep looking at you funny.

I had one guy who did that 2 nights in a row. During the day, he was oriented, but around 11pm was the witching hour. In the morning, he'd be all owl-eyed - "Wait, miss, you say I did WHAT?"

That should have come with a beverage alert!:nailbiting::roflmao:

nothing like realizing you need a urinal AND a graduated cylinder to empty a foley or make 3 trips to the toilet!

I haven't had any problems emptying them, but my very first foley on a woman was not so easy........I was a GN, had only put in a foley on a man, but I knew how in theory....thank goodness I asked the CNA to come in to help.

I had everything set up perfectly, did everything I was supposed to, but for some reason it just would not go in. The wonderful older cna who had been around a decade or two just looked at me, smiled and said "honey, I think your sticking it in a little too high", needless to say, 2nd foley, I aimed a little lower, actually saw where it was to go, and hit it!!! ahh, good times, good times...

We laughed for days on that one, I learned right then I had better listen to both cna's and lvn's because they just might teach me something. I might have GN/RN next to my name, but fresh out of school, I knew nothing.

Yes, I learned that same lesson after passing my boards many years ago. I had to insert an NG tube (in a nursing home, no less!!) and would have been in deep trouble without a wonderful LPN coaching me through it.
