It's understandable when a patient yells at you when in pain. But, it's NEVER ok when they yell at you because they want something. Or, because they think they are right. Has a patient ever yelled at you? Please share your experience...

I work behavioral health, I get yelled at a lot. Usually because the doctor has ticked them off.

I hate it when DOCTORS yell at me... about not having arranged an interpreter that he needs for a patient I'm not taking care of. Yes, that actually happened once. In the hall. I told him to page the interpreter and set up the appointment himself.

I've been screamed at by a few angry family members in the past.

I notice that the least-involved family members scream the loudest and act like plumb fools. They live locally, yet they've visited mother only once during her two-week stay.

Geriatric dementia patients, many with psych diagnosis as well....its a rare day I don't get yelled at!

By grown ups and kids alike. I usually can just let it roll because of the situation. It's a form of taking control of a rough situation. Not the best way, but I try to remember it's not personal.

There's a certain delightful client where I work that will curse at staff if things don't go his way, ie: light on to turn up his TV. Staff will show him which button on the remote performs that task. He curses at them. I've told them to just walk away, no need for treatment like that!

    Tell me about it.

Sometimes, it's actually more alarming when they're not yelling and have gone very quiet instead. In psych, too quiet can be just as bad as too loud.

And haven't worked a day in their life.
